I need a way to do awesome space boots with fire shooting out of them. Or what if someone wanted to do clown shoes? Or a tail? Why so much focus on the head?
On many a Minecraft player skin, where troll horns, furry ears, dragon crests or helmet spikes should stand proudly erect, there exist sad little stumps and flat textures.
6 blank 8x8 squares exist on skin templates, enough to allow my idea for an addition to skins.
The side external head texture should be made 4 pixels higher, with the additional height being two-sided, with one of the currently blank 8x8 areas being dedictated to each side, the top half for outer and bottom for inner.
Reaching up to the same height would be the crest of the texture running from the back of the top of the head to the front of the top of the head, 4 pixels high also, with a left and right side, using one 8x8 square of texture.
Using the remaining 8x8 square would be the same again, except perpendicular, going from left to right, like a headband.
2 4x8 areas and 2 4x4 areas remain on the template. The two 4x8 areas can be used together to function as a secondary external head top, which sits on the upper external head sides, crest and headband.
Now, find a problem with this idea. I dare you.
And if you find a problem with this idea you're probably wrong.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
No matter how many times I read this I can't really see what you're getting at, but it sounds like you're making it based on horns and headcrests and the like. It sounds like your idea removes the ability to put a hat-layer anywhere below the forehead.

I said there were 2 4x4 areas left. Make those external leg bottom if you like.
Mojang may not want to look like they're tailoring their game for furries.
And the head is where detail is the most dense on character design 99% of the time.

As a skin maker meself, I'm on the line for this... Maybe something for the whole body and not just the head? I'd love to have backpacks, swords, and tails. Adds more characters. And don't assume tails with furries, assume them with mythological creatures dating to the dawn of man.
Well... No. Hat layers are layers that are applied outside the head, making it look larger. This will not help make hats and things unless the ability to make these in 3D is added which I doubt will.
i think what he means is giving the player the ability to upload a custom model along with the skin. i dont see a problem with doing this however on a PVP server there will need to be an option to force over or undersized players to a default skin for the purpose of hitbox

TT2000, you are genius.
You can just double the size of the texture area.
If done right, it would not corrupt already existing skins.
Not quite double. Just 50% higher, which is the limit without changing the texture area.
It also adds two extra sections to the hat layer.

Seriously? Why on earth would I suggest that?

But why not the whole body?
