There are many suggestion on this forum for an obsidian weapon. The problem is, people expect it to be 5 billion times more powerful than a diamond sword. I have always thought that this was insane, as obsidian is much more common than diamond. The things I will cover in this topic will balance this.
The Whetstone
The Whetstone is the first step in the creation of the ultimate weapon. When placed, you can right click with any sword and it will be enchanted with Sharpness 1. It has 3 uses, after which, it will drop a piece of smooth stone.
Three of them also aid in the creation of The Grindstone.
The Grindstone
The Grindstone is the second tier of the sharpstones. It works the same as the whetstone, except it enchants items with sharpness 2 and has 10 uses. When broken, it will drop an iron ingot. Three Grindstones are used to create the final tier, the Hero Stone.
The Hero Stone
The Hero Stone is used to create the ultimate weapon. It has 15 uses and enchants items with Sharpness 3. It is also used to sharpen obsidian, which is used in the creation of the Ultimate Weapon.
The MacuaHuitl
You are probably wondering what this is. The Macuahuitl was a sword used by aztec forces in mexico. It resembles a Wooden club with obsidian blades in the sides. Records say that it was sharp enough to easily decapitate a horse. All Metal blades, even it is not visible right away, have a rough edge, even if it looks extremely sharp. an obsidian blade, even if looked at through a microscope, have a completely sharp edge.
It does 8 points of damage and has the effects of Sharpness 1.

Hm. This seems pretty good. But you didn't specify if these were rare or not. It could be like a n00b stumbling upon a lot of these and boom. Easy Minecraft.

Seems like a good idea, but if it had sharpness 2 AND did 9 hearts of damage then it would really do about 12 hearts of damadge (unless its like a diamond sword or something with sharpness 2) Remove that and Its a great idea.
Way too overpowered. Stone and cobble? First day stuff. I could get an iron sword with Sharpness 1 on my first day!
Grindstone, even more overpowered. 9 stone, 9 cobble plus 3 ingots? That's baby stuff!
No support.
Overpowered unless the grindstone uses resources that are more difficult to obtain on the first few days. Not to self promote, but kind of how I did the sharpener in the mod Flint Craft that I am currently keeping updated. It uses redstone like a "fuel" and can break.
