I am sure this is not completely original, because I am going to just assume that at least someone out there has thought of this idea. I just would like some feedback before I go about making an extremely simple SMALL mod that only really effects 2 items. Here is the idea; Coal, it only stacks up to 64.
Not enough explanation? Alright, let me try it like this. If you are a Minecrafter like me, you collect a LOT of resources, regardless whether they are of any use immediately or not. I find myself constantly adding in new chests and expanding my storage area, to store my extreme excess of Coal and Charcoal. I literally have, 9 large chests completely full with Full stacks of Coal and Charcoal.
At some point, Iron, Gold, and Diamonds were given the ability to put 9 into a block and that would reduce the amount of space. A stack of 64 I/G/D Blocks, equals out to 576 Pieces of I/G/D. That is one space from 9. That leaves 8 more empty spaces in a chest.
So if you are still with me, at this point- this is what I have in mind. Stacking Coal/ Charcoal into a Coal/ Charcoal Block. They would be black with some detail in them like the Coal/ Charcoal Pieces. You can even use them to build with, and would give off a black "dusty" particle, especially if walked on. As an added bonus, you could put One Coal block into a furnace and it would burn for as long as 9 pieces of coal.
Now, there are some obvious draw backs, if you only need to smelt a few things of iron, you're obviously not going to use a whole block of coal, but say you have an entire stack of Iron? 64 Iron Ore can burn through 6 or 7 pieces of Coal easily, so would the 2 extra pieces of coal be worth it? It is the same with the Lava Bucket.
My idea doesn't just stop at the Coal or Charcoal. Flint is also another big deal. Yes, Flint has it's use and purpose with Arrows, as well as limited use of Flint and Steel, but what if we had a Flint block that when lit on fire- doesn't stay continuously lit like Netherack, but doesn't burn out as quick as wood.
I want some people's opinion on this, because if Mojang would be willing to do this, than I might not have to make this into a small Mod. I am also going to be posting in the Mods area of the Forums, so I can get some feedback on a Mod, but here-- I want feed back on what you think as a community.
Is this something that Minecraft should make into the game? It would cut back on wasted storage of Coal/ Charcoal and Flint. It would have uses as well for decoration. What is your opinion?
I also have an idea regarding Burning Trees with Flint and Steel, but I will post that later on.
Coal blocks, as you're probably aware, were added to the April Fool's update Minecraft 2.0. Dinnerbone (or if you call him by his real name Nathan Adams) does wish that they could be added to Minecraft, but because of some issues that it has with charcoal, they're going to be a little hard to implement if it ever gets a chance.
I didn't watch the April Fool Update. Most of the video's featured mods anyways. If Dinnerbone or Jeb or someone officially from Mojang made a video and said FOR sure that some of the stuff was planned, than I would believe it. Twitter Posts, meh, maybe.
One idea DragonHeroBlaze had (hasn't posted it on the forums as far as I know) was to just remove charcoal-when you put a log into a furnace it turns into coal. That effectively solves that problem, right?
Also, in someone else's coal block thread, their suggestion was to have eight coal to a block so that one block would smelt an entire 64 stack of something. I think that's probably the best way to do it, although a little unusual.

That last part was what I mentioned as well.
