Every Minecraft player has dealt with short-comings with chests, their limit of storage, their weakness to Creepers, etc. I have come up with a solution to this problem: Chest upgrades. Now these upgrades are not what you would think of when you first hear it, they are not upgrades that are crafted and applied to chests, but rather advanced forms of chests.
First, we have the Cobblestone Chest:
Co-Co-Co
Co-Ch-Co
Co-Co-Co
The Cobblestone Chest is crafted by surrounding a chest with cobblestone. This is useful for miners that have copius amounts of cobblestone and want to get rid of it by doing something useful with it. The Cobblestone Chest is resistant to Creeper explosions (although not immune). It also has six more slots than a normal chest.
Next, we have the Iron Chest:
I - I - I
I-CC-I
I - I - I
The Iron Chest is crafted by surrounding a Cobblestone Chest with Iron Ingots. This has the same amount of resistance to explosions as the Cobblestone Chest but has 15 more slots than a normal chest.
Finally we have the Obsidian Chest:
O-O-O
O-IC-O
O-O-O
The Obsidian Chest is crafted by surrounding an Iron Chest with Obsidian. This chest is completely immune to all explosions and has 25 more slots than a normal chest.
I know this idea isn't perfect, but I think that my fellow Minecrafters can see eye-to-eye with where I'm coming from here. Thank you for reading through this and any suggestions for this idea would be greatly appreciated as I am open to criticism. I hope this gets supporters!
Just what would the chest interfaces look like? For example, for your cobblestone chest, it's storage would go fro 3x9 to 3x11? And can they be double-chested for double the rows?
Cobblestone chest: Just make it have the same space as wooden chest, but with the explosion resistance of stone, is enough of an upgrade for this. and instead of simply more storage space, it should have a little something special. Otherwise, no support.
Iron Chest: Isn't that a mod? lol. So you'd go from a 3x9 slots item to a 6x7 slots item or what? Then a double iron chest would be what, 122 high by 7 wide? Ugh... Costly, better to use a double wooden chest. The storage should be 17 more than a normal chest, not 15 more, so that the chest interface is simply going from 3x9 to 4x11. (with a double chest being 8x11), at least it would look better. And it should be even more resistant to explosions, of not altogether immune. Again, make it different, not just bigger! also, how would all those bigger chests intereact with the Comparator's chest filling detection without making this too complex? There are real ramification to consider here.
Obsidian Chest: the shape would be, I guess, 4x13 slots now? and 8x13 for a double chest? Anyway, no support, because we already have the Ender chest, and that is way too close for comfort.
Remember that Chests already store a LOT and that you now can put them one over the other and even side by side (by altenating with trapped chests.), so this effectively already doubled the max storage density (per block in your chest wall) that you previously could have.
Not a big fan of this chest idea I'm sorry to say.
