One of the primary components that makes Minecraft so compelling for me (and *I think* for many other players) is the sense that the world around you is so much bigger than you. It's a wild, untamed world awaiting two hard-working hands to sculpt it into something worthwhile, something safe and wonderful. You know: the minecraft world is sometimes really terrifying and beyond the control of the player, which is quite an achievement in a game with graphics that are so intentionally basic.
For these reasons, I consider the "bigness" of the minecraft world and the difficulty with which the player subdues this world to be thematic. Perhaps this is forward, but my opinion is that it is one of the main thematic elements of the game. It is for this reason that i would like to make a suggestion. Or, perhaps... an Anti-Suggestion? (Is it okay to do that?)
I would like to suggest that adding certain powerful, tamable mobs to Minecraft would undermine an extremely important aspect of the game.
For example, the over-requested tamable red dragon: I think that this idea undercuts one of minecraft's main themes by putting too much power in the hands of the player. The kind of combat power that a dragon ought to have in order to even be considered a dragon is sort of a point in and of itself, but I also think that giving flight capability to the player is a bit over-powered in the sense that it would allow him or her more or less completely safe and quite expedient travel in the over-world. (In that same sense, I am somewhat opposed to the griffon idea, having read the existing thread about it more or less thoroughly. Apologies to those who support; let me know if I've made a decent argument)
What my thoughts on the subject of tamable mobs boils down to is essentially this: I think that tamable mobs ought to be extremely basic in function, or else they threaten one of the chief aspects of Minecraft. I like Wolves, I like Ocelots, I even support the idea of horses quite a bit, but flight and/or anything more powerful than a wolf might be a step in the wrong direction.
Apologies if this is (rightfully) seen as a shameless bump, won't do it again. I'm just curious to know others' ideas on the subject, and really don't want to make a duplicate post.
Well, they're not adding tameble dragons so you have nothing to fear. I have to oppose your opposition on flying mounts. They would provide a new way to travel without being totally over powered.

You don't think that flying is a bit OP? I guess... I guess I feel like flight is the norm in creative for a reason. It feels like an ability that would cause me to lose interest in survival.
There was an interesting forum topic about Gryfins (spelled horribly wrong, sorry about that) that look like it could add balanced and non-op flight no minecraft.

Ever hear of something called running away? Its like running towards them, but without the confrontation and death.

If you haven't read the Gryphon suggestion, that's amazingly well balanced flight in survival.

Ditto. It's not like flight in Creative mode - you have to learn how to fly with the mount, and it's certainly tougher than just holding the space and W keys at the same time AFAIK. I'd have to say that flight CAN be implemented pretty well in Survival if it comes with drawbacks, as with any other forms of transportation.
But yeah, I can agree - there is such a thing as too much power, and for my taste, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Imagine what a greifer would be capable of should he have a pet Enderdragon or something, for example.

Well, I for one think and end-game way to fly should exist, so you can easily admire your work and your builds from above. Or other players works.
But it should not be something that allows you to easily safely and quickly explore huge new areas of the map (to find even more temples and stuff). Or that let's you grief even more easily.
So here is how I'd do it: You'd enter the Dreamscape though sleeping in a bed while under the effect of an eatable one-shot item that is also costly (kinda like the Golden Apple's cost). While the bed is now occupied by a sleeping solid but immobile version of you, you are actually standing beside the bed and look somewhat transparent yourself, as if you got up from the bed, but only your spirit got up, while your body stayed sleeping. In that state, your entire inventory would be empty and greyed out, and you would not wear armor or anything, and you couldn't interact with stuff. You're be pushed away by everything, take lots of extra knockback from everything, and you couldn't move further away from the bed than the sight range you had when you were at that bed. Mobs and other players still see you and you also take extra damage from everything as you are now as flimsy as a ghost. You become solid again by returning to the bed and clicking on you own "sleeping" body. Also, you so very slowly lose health, and don't regenerate from hunger.
Ergo, you now have a way to fly, but in a limited, original, well defined way. You can make say a 5 minutes long flying trip, but stay away for longer than that and you die for real.
A bit complex but I think it would give the effect the OP wants.
I also personally think Griffins are still OP: sure, getting them requires some persistence but it's a relatively simple thing to do it just requires some luck then patience and not getting too sidetracked. And once you've got your saddled griffon then its unlimited *overland* high-altitude flight capability only at the cost of constant spacebar clicking. The griffon doesn't have "durability", so that would be actual flight at no real cost. Making something powerful costly and hard to get does not automatically make it balanced.
While I agree that there should be a limit to the player's power, I still would like to see those griffons, though! Minecraft is just one of those games where everybody plays it the way they want so having too much power isn't as big a problem in that game as it can be in other games.
Hm. I made a point to read the gryphon thread before starting this one, and I still didn't like it. However, I guess that's my opinion and I can see that I'm outnumbered on that point.
I guess you said it better than I did: I think that even with the attempt to balance gryphon flight, it's still limitless overland travel essentially forever.
I think that the idea of the red dragon is far out of the mind of Jeb! That is probably one of the last things on his mind. One thing that people in the Minecraft community mistake is that they don't realize that Jeb and the others at Mojang have a brain. They understand when things are overpowered, stupid, or useless. They would never make dragons tameable in the way that you are appealing to. So far I think that Mojang has done a very good job with balancing the game, making it more fun to play
I supported the gryphon thread, but once I read this it made me rethink that support. It's definitely balanced, but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't detract something from the game. Sure it would be fun and cool, but at what cost to the landscape and the joy of everything else? Maybe I'm wrong, it's quite possible, but I now think flight in survival needs some serious discussion. You're definitely right about the red dragon, although I wouldn't mind a non-tamable one. I'm not sure it makes any sense to "support" an "anti-suggestion" but I see where you're coming from.

Heh, sorry. I guess I want to suggest that there /shouldn't/ be many more tamable mobs, but maybe that isn't the same thing as a suggestion.
