I'm getting sick of finding a village, trying to fence it and put torches in it, and yet almost all villagers get killed anyway before I finish defending the place.
The only way I've found on how to deal with this is to flee from the village as soon as I see it from far away, so that it's chunks get unloaded. Then place a bed or little base about 180 to 200 blocks away from the village. Then at daybreak I move into the village, work a bit to defend it, and then quickly run away to my bed/outpost as soon as sunset arrives. Doing this several Minecraft days in a row, I can eventually manage to fully defend a village by fencing it off and fully lighting it.
Trying to defend the village by staying in it always end up in a big ugly failure even if I have diamond tools and lots of equipment.
If I do the mistake of going mining under the village without making 100% sure it's perfectly airtight against mobs first, then when I come back up all I see is a ghost town.
A village's "survival" should not depend 100% on the player arriving already fully prepared to protect it all on daybreak, already carrying 4 stacks of fences and 8 stacks of torches with him, and leaving every night.
So I thought that villages should probably spawn with the following things already:
1- Some good amount of fences and cobble walls. Definitely not everywhere, but still a good fraction of the perimeter. Especially in places where it would be extra-effective, like in between 2 houses.
2- Also, 2-deep "trenches". Same role as the fences, really.
3- More torches. Way, way much more. Not only above doors but also at the sides and backs of buildings. And even way out there along the perimeter (on simple fence posts): not enough to make the village airtight, but surely enough to cut down on the amount and size of the attacks. In fact if you keep only one of the 10 things listed here it's this one!
4- Some already spawned iron golems.
5- All villagers able to fight and pick up tools (not armor or other stuff). Even with weapons, alone they would flee, but when they clearly outnumber the monsters (using a simple formula: value = attack power times remaining health, summed with nearby villagers, divided by total enemy mobs hit points in range), they attack instead. The equipped tool only shows up when the villager panics because of mobs. Giving another tool/weapon to a villager will always make him pick up the new tool and drop the old one He also drops the item upon death. However a villager won't pick up things in a mad cycle, they have only a random chance of picking stuff up and less chance if they just picked something up recently. The first order of business for a player finding a village would be to give everybody a decent weapon.
6- A few villagers have a dog "already tamed" by them, protecting and following them and only them. Every once in a while, rarely, a villager that is going from baby to adult will also gain 1 tamed dog.
7- A few village cats. Those can't be tamed by players, don't climb on chests or bed or furnaces, and seem to move randomly within the village, but seem attracted to creepers, and will tend to stick mostly to the village's periphery.
8- New "soldier" and "archer" villagers. Those would wear iron and leather armor, respectively, and fight with iron and bow, respectively. They are very active at night, mainly randomly patrolling along the gravel roads, while mostly staying indoors during the day. The archer attack mobs pretty much like a skeleton attacks the player (it doesn't actually carry real arrows, and it's shot arrows can't be picked up). They like to stick together, flee when hurt too much, and run towards the sound of doors being banged upon.
9- New "building" for filling several of those "empty spots" inside villages perimeter: courtyard. An example of a courtyard could be a flower garden, for example. Or a fenced tree. some amount of lighting would always be there. Thus, these "buildings" would help avoid the "empty spots" inside the very village itself to become the starting points of mob infestations. It would still occur, only much less so.
10- All villagers heal all damage at daybreak.
All these things combined would mean that a village at least has a good chance to defend itself and would not get attacked three times every night.
Also, when a village has *lots* of room for growth, it should:
- Make baby villagers more often
- Magically attract new adult villagers directly.
Thus even if an entire village's population is fully destroyed, the village will become inhabited again by new villagers.
You should just build a bed in the village and bypass the night
Sorry, I couldn't making a reference to the "Beds are OP" thread.
Anyway, I think you bring up so good ideas. Personally, I think it's better if the villagers stay out of the fights themselves, but I thought the idea of adding village dogs and cats is a great idea. I also think it's a reasonable idea that all villages automatically start out with one iron golem.
Also, I definitely like the idea of adding more light sources to the default village.
