This might have been suggested before, but I couldn't find it.
I thought it would be good to add another type of golem, the iron archer golem. Just replace the middle iron block with a dispenser, and when created the golem would shoot at targets from a distance, but also use the melee attack when mobs are within a certain range. Doesn't sound like it would break the anything and it would add a bit more variety to the game.
Now please explain how it won't inadvertently kill off the villagers while shooting at zombies lol.
Well, zombies tend to come out at night, and villagers go indoors at night, so they will usually not be in the way.
But there are plenty of other possible scenarios where the villagers will suffer from some friendly fire.

I like the idea of a more fragile golden golem that can't use melee to balance it all out, but the friendly fire issue seems to be unavoidable. I also like the idea of using the dispenser as a head instead of a torso for balancing reasons.

Yes, great idea! Maybe something like this?
Spawned like an iron golem, but with gold blocks and a dispenser as its head. It has 25 hearts of health (half as iron golems) and shoots arrows, but cannot use the melee attack. They can spawn in villages: 1 golem every 25 villagers. They will drop gold ingots and yellow flowers on death (gold farms anyone?) and will give out yellow flowers to villager children.

Curse PremiumWait. Won't they accidently shoot villagers too?
I agree.
I think the entire archer utility mob thing should be done completely differently:
Use gold blocks instead. The archer golem would be a much more fragile mob! Still pretty sturdy and way better than a snowman though lol.

I think that's a wonderful idea.
