Sand piles are exactly what they sound like. They are piles of sand. Four sand piles can be crafted with one sand block. They look like any other dust item, like sugar and redstone, but they are the color of sand.
Sand piles can be placed like redstone. They do not affect any functionality of redstone though. This can be useful for the first day of Minecraft, where you may need a trail from the spawn to your house. The color of sand stands out against the grass, too, making it effective, and visible from distances. Just don't place it on sand blocks, it will be invisible.
Sand piles can be smelted into glass shards. They look like flint, but they are clear. These can be crafted into arrows, that are stronger than flint arrows. Flint arrow's damage is reduced by three hearts. to nerf arrows a bit. That will encourage players to craft their own arrows, and not rely on skeleton's drops as much. Also, glass shards are easy to get anyhow.
Four glass shards can be crafted into glass blocks. When you break glass blocks, they will now return 1-3 shards, so you don't lose your glass completely.
I like the idea of placing sand on the floor, but there's a problem with shards arrows. Because sand is quite easier to get than flint, shards are more common, and therefore, shard arrows should do less damage than flint ones, IMO.
The rarity of the crafting materials shouldn't matter, as killing skeletons creates RENEWABLE arrows.
Maybe if the CURRENT arrow damage was increased, or shards fly further and what not.
I'm not 100 percent sure about the 'glass arrow' concept - nerfing the existing arrow and creating a new, easier to get, more powerful version doesn't seem prudent to me. The rest, however, I support fully.
Perhaps add a recipe to craft glass shards directly into glass panes - it would be quite a bit more convenient..
