We know that skeletons are not so stupid after all. They hide under trees at daytime to avoid being burnt. Why wouldn't they plant saplings ? They should try to plant saplings toward both of the 2 nearest cave in their area until they reach the safety of a dark place. Or something about those lines.
I also believe zombies and maybe spiders should also have some sort of funny survival behavior that could make the map regenerate over a long period of time. I just explained how forests expand, but we could also make zombies furious when they can't climb somewhere and just bash into the dirt until it fall apart. That would explain why most of the map is smooth looking despite creepers are always making holes everywhere.
Pushing the idea to the limit, I starting believing each mobs should do something like that in such a way that given enough time, a flat land map would start to resemble to a normal generated map.
No maybe they should just fertilize the Saplings they come across by 1. You know how Bone Meal is made and how it works right?
So now, they could interact more with the environment, yet they would only put trees where you want trees to be on. Why? Saplings dont generate naturally. Players could chooses where to place Saplings. And Skeletons fertilizing them would not be a problem.
I think it would just ruin a lot of builds. Having mobs that burn during the day was a great future; but said mobs planting their own trees? I think that would be taking it a little to far. It might prove more annoying than fun as a feature. If someone was to make a build, random skeletons plopping down trees would prove a little annoying.
Features like seeds spreading from trees would make a better argument, since it would provide weathering of un-maintained buildings, but even then, people could argue for it to simply remain as a possible mod[/plugin, possibly] (Since more people would be against it than it's worth).
Even if this feature would be a wanted one by a lot of the community and Mojang, I think that it would rather have it done by a smarter being (e.g. Testificate).

That's... not much of a connection. They hide under trees to escape the sun, that doesn't mean they care for planting trees they probably won't last long enough to see.
Absolutely no support. This is something that should be left to players, not mobs. You're gonna have skeletons eventually planting crap in places you don't want.

I don't think it would be destructive to man made building. First of all, they would still avoid light. So they shouldn't try to move toward your house. There could also be simple tricks, like 2 block wide gravel roads that could prevent them to plant that way. Also, I don't think it would be very fast. It can take a long time for a single sapling to grow...

They don't exactly "avoid light", especially if you are in the house. I think it would prove more problematic, especially if you are trying to make a themed build. You couldn't just argue for them to "turn it to peacefull mode", because a lot of people like playing, and building, on public servers.
I always thought of it more instinctive than smart. If a wolf hides in a cave, it will stay in that cave as long as needed, no matter how shallow, without building extensions in the front or digging towards the back. What more with the undead?
