Basically, this idea is for mapmakers. Every weapon should have more configurable properties.
Only configurable with 3rd party tools, but configurable none the less. No, not to change how
every item behaves in general, but more ways to tweak individual items. You could create
endless new types of sword and bows!
Sprite - The sprite this item uses. Can be the default sprite, but you can also use custom sprites.
How? PLace a sprite in the map folder, and then the item can use that sprite!
Hortizontal Knockback - How far back a hit knocks mobs and players back.
Vertical knockback - How much mobs and players are launched upwards by a hit.
Damage - self-explanatory
Durrability - Also self-explanatory
Reach - The number of blocks the item can interact with stuff from.
Effects - Allows you to make the weapon give various potion effects on hit.
You can specify the effects, the ammount of time applied, and the chance
in percentage of a strike succesfully inflicting the effect.
Particles - A completely aesthetic option which allows you to make the weapon
emit particle effects in a specified rate or density.
So, for example, I could make something called a "jungle hammer" in my adventure map
which looks like a stone hammer with vines growing on it, does small damage, strong
knockback, and "stuns" mobs with slowness 1 and weakness 1 for 5 seconds with a
10% chance of poisoning them for 4 seconds. No cumbersome mods would be required
to play the map, which would be a major plus, yet it does not effect vanilla survival
gameplay at all because this could only be accomplished with 3rd-party tools (And
possibly a creative mode item editor)
I like the first part, about custom sprite, as I have a thread about something like this (the forge).
I also like the particle and effect thingies.
all the others can be edited via McEdit.
I'd think that with the new API, blocks could be added this way.
This way would be a good thing for all items, you could make extremely fragile swords that are trophies or super strong tools which are made using "titanium" ore.
Perhaps blocks could have an assigned block ID so you could make new blocks that drop new items?

And the modifiable sprite should be avaiable for every blocks and items. That would be awesome!

I'm probably rambling but yeh...
Mojang Support is decent I guess.
Gamelord, your statement is false - he wants custom sprites.
Anyways, I like the idea of new item sprites for swords and bows.
I really like the particle idea, and the potions effects. It would really improve adventure maps!
Support, and a +1 for you!
