Because I, personally, would (if necessary stop holding my sword/pickaxe/etc. and hold it with one hand, and then) take the torch with my available hand. If this was reality. And think about it: if you hit the torch with your sword, it would break in half or something. It would make much more sense to take it without attacking/digging/mining/etc. it.
True, but by that logic, they shouldn't lose any durability for hitting ANYTHING other than what they were originally intended to be used on, as your other hand would be more effective.

I am pretty sure if you hit a torch with a stone pickaxe it would not do alot but if you hit the hardest material in the game, bedrock, it would crumble.

I am pretty sure if you hit a torch with a stone pickaxe it would not do alot but if you hit the hardest material in the game, bedrock, it would crumble.
