Here's an idea I came up with that solves one of the problems with adding new ores in minecraft:
When you add a new ore, you can't just retroactively add them to old chunks. They'd have to generate along with new chunks, meaning that players would have to abandon old territories to get the new ores.
So... how about adding some new "ores" right now, without actually adding them?
The future ore block (or blocks) is basically a duplicate stone block. The game would simply have multiple block IDs for the stone block, with one or more of the IDs being generated like an ore would be generated. If one of the blocks is broken, it drops a regular stone block, not the new ore ID block.
It would be a completely invisible change for the user, expect that now placeholders for new ores are being generated now instead of later in case Mojang does decide to add a new ore. If they don't, then basically nothing has changed, and it doesn't matter. If they do, then the game after being patched will simply recognize the new blocks as the new ore. From the user's standpoint, the new ores will simply pop into existence in their old chunks.
Why not just add new ores now, and come up with a use for them later?
Mojang doesn't want to do this. They've had people asking for new ores forever, and if they wanted to go that route, they would have. You can debate the pros and cons of doing so, but this way removes all of the cons and makes it a pretty safe way of adding a new ore now when they don't have any ideas for it yet.
Wow... this is brilliant. Not sure how many they should add though, and should their be nether versions too?
Only real issue I see with this is they may add more than just ores. They may add new biomes or structures, making you have to make a new world anyway.

I'm sure they will, but new biomes aren't being added every patch and new structures are a thing that many players probably won't feel as compelled to seek out as new ores.

Well this method should be implemented as soon as possible.

Given how slow they've been to add them so far, we're probably talking 2-3 tops. Maybe 4-5, but they only spawn in certain biomes.
