My suggestion is to add breaking animations overlaid over mob skins. That way you can sort of tell how much damage a mob has taken.
If you don't understand what I mean by breaking animations, it's the cracks you see forming when you slowly mine a block. I'm suggesting to take that behaviour from blocks, and add it to mobs.
No, no support. Your pet wolf would have cracks in it, when a chicken suffocates it will have cracks in it, a squid out of water will have cracks in it.
I think the cracks would look like scars or wounds, depending on which mob we're talking about. The reason I prefer this idea is because there are mods out there that add a life bar over the top of the heads of mobs, and I've always thought life bars were immersion-breaking. At least with cracks/wounds, it would look like the mob is really taking damage.
