So, I was thinking that the game could use block types that damage people that try to remove them. They'd be an interesting addition to base defense. So, I decided to combine it with a few different things:
The spear
[iron]
Sand is air
iron is iron ingot
wood is wood
Now, when you hold the spear it functions as a standard tool. It would do decent damage to mobs but less than the sword and be pretty terrible for removing blocks. However, when you right click you place the spear in the ground. I was thinking it would face at a 45 degree angle away from the player or something. If you ran into the pointy end or fell on it you would take damage. Perhaps you would take damage if you were trying to remove it from the wrong side.
This would make palisades possible. In addition, if mobs were programmed to avoid them they would be a useful way to keep the sheep away from your crops. They'd also make stake pits of doom possible.
Whoops, you're right. Really, the spear shape has been used quite a bit. Wood blocks then. Throwing the spear is an option, but I thought that then spears would overlap quite a bit with arrows. It's still an option though. Just then when you make them you should get 4 at least.
I would rather see a line of logs lined up in that fashion (no iron bit) for palisades. They were usually just logs anyway.
Spear throwing is a must. Maybe not as far but should do great damage.
The thing about logs is they're a bit too uncommon to build massive walls with. Maybe just a 3x1 vertical row of wood?
And changing the angle of the spear would work. I just like simplicity so having one spear direction instead of two pulling double duty seemed reasonable to me, even if your death pits would look a bit off.
The idea of a throwing spear is that you have a weapon that takes up a whole slot that gives you limited ranged capabilities. Arrows can be stacked and taken directly from the inventory(Or quiver eventually), and thus allow you more leeway in how accurate you are. A throwing spear is a one-shot must kill them now weapon, or just a side thing to carry around in case some ranged weapon is needed in only one slot. And really, the concept of a spear infringes on the sword more than a throwing spear on arrows.
That is a good point. I was considering saying they'd have significantly longer reach than swords but less damage but that might just be overpowered as a player with a sword couldn't get close.
I like the stakepit idea, but I'm not too partial to the throwing spear. Seeing as there's no weapon interaction, such as actual sword fighting, I doubt there'd be any reason for someone to make a sword, despite higher damage.
Anyway, I actually much prefer the idea of sticking spears into the ground as opposed to throwing them, because it doesn't conflict with the ranged bow+arrow niche. I mean there's nothing wrong with having more than one type of ranged weapon, but it seems like all bases should be covered before you go and add multiples for a single type. Not only that but this idea doubles the spears for use in both spiked palisades and spike pits. That's 3 new uses in one item (long attack range, spiked walls, spiked pits)! Gotta be more attractive than just stabbing and throwing, especially when ranged, pointy sticks (arrows) are already accounted for.
Assuming the bow does a damage of 1, the spear would do 1 damage in melee, but 3 damage when thrown. This is to prevent someone from relying on flint spears as opposed to the equivalently damaging mined material weapon in melee.
In addition, I feel the spear should have a shorter range, but if this complicates things in programing it would be fine, considering the spears wouldn't be able to stack and break when hitting an enemy after being thrown (like arrows).
I know this doesn't necessarily apply for placeable spears, but I didn't want to double up posts in the forum.
However, another possible alternative would be to use this recipe for the placeable spears:

. . . and this recipe for the mined material: (where is the material)
I would suggest that spears be a simple and cheap method of early ranged attack.
The following formula:
Stabbing with the spear deals damage as a tool, but it can be thrown. This allows spears to be crafted without a work station and doesn't make them a deal breaker, but if you are too early (or too chicken) to try and hunt spiders for string it gives you something to throw at creepers.

I like that idea. But here's a better formula.

Normal swings with the left click, and better range than a sword, I'd imagine. But can also be thrown with the right-click command like an arrow. Will stick to an enemy, and drop when the enemy dies. Like a fallen arrow, can be picked back up again.
And of course, Iron can be substituted for wood and diamond like any other tool.
*EDIT*
Actually, y'know what?

I like this guy's formula design. But of course replace the wood with sticks.
Why not use flint like suggested? Would be nice if it got more uses.
Also, if it has longer range then sword, why use a sword?
Have it be slightly less effective than a sword up close, but as suggested; with an option to throw it.
Just that gives it a nice advantage.
Also, it should be able to be used into mechanism like the dispenser to create spear-firing traps or something else to make spears pop out of the floor/wall and then retract.

But yeah, I would prefer the ability to throw the spear instead of place it.
It's like a blend of Red Faction: Guerilla, Minecraft and Star Wars. Oh. And it's an MMO.

Spear throwing is a must. Maybe not as far but should do great damage.
Additionally, perhaps you could choose what angle the spear was placed on? 45 degrees for palisades, 90 for pits.

This recipe would produce only one spear.
The spear would allow melee and ranged attacks.

I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this.
Yay for my first thought out post.

I think that look more like a dart.
