As most of us know, the villages in Minecraft aren't really good, especially compared to strongholds. So I've been thinking of an idea that in my opinion is good, I'm sure a lot of others would agree.
Villages are a bit bigger, with one shop in a small village, and 3 in a large one. There would also be a mayor home for a villager who wears fancy clothes, like a scarf and a gown - But is usually guarded by guards who will protect the mayor, they'll be mentioned later. The player can work for the mayor, bringing items like gunpowder, bones, ores etc to him in exchange for food, emeralds, paper etc.
Trading: The trading people who own the shops in the village will have good deals, such as diamond armour and foods such as pork; they will be quite pricey too.
Blacksmith: His shop has been much improved, and his chest is in a partially destroyed storage unit, which most of the chests have crappy loot in it but on has the usual loot from blacksmiths.
Villagers: They live in nicer houses, usually 2 stories, with plants, paintings etc. They are decorated well and have a chest with some seeds and apples, or rarely meat.
Guards: They live in the barracks under the guard tower, which will be a large structure (Slightly taller than the church) and carry bow and arrows. Guards protecting the mayor and shops will carry swords. If one is attacked, they work like wolves and a lot of the village start attacking.
Mayor house: The mayor house will be significantly bigger than the other structures and would have a cobblestone wall around it. There would be a small vault which is underground which can be opened by using a redstone code to unlock the safe after gaining trust off the mayor, which has anything from 1 gold, to 5 diamonds (And iron, redstone ect) Alternately, the player could break in and cause the villagers to become hostile and for them to attack.
Golems: They'd be backups for the guards, if no guards are in a village then a golem would spawn.
Churches: They'd be bigger, and the priest would often be seen with a book in his hand, villagers will often be with him, unless a service is going on, you can tell if a service is happening since most of the village will be in the church, and the mayor would be there with his body guards. (A perfect time for robbing that vault..)
Farms: A new villager type will have a farm around 10 blocks away from the actual village. They'll be big and have carrots, potatoes, melons and wheat growing in them. A small farm house will exist with some supplies like a hoe and axe will spawn.
Villages: Multiple types of villages would spawn. Jungle Villages will be overrun with trees and a lot of buildings will of collapsed in on themselves, the mayor will live in the ruins with a guard or two underground.
Ocean type, they'll spawn on the edge of land and have a port or something with a boat stationed in it. A lighthouse might be available which has glowstone lighting up it.
Mountain type, they'll be slightly burrowed into the bottom of the mountain. The guard tower will be near the peak of the mountain and the barracks will take a ladder to the village.
Note this is my suggestion based on what I think would be better. I can expand if people agree with me, making a mock-up set and stuff. Voice your opinions now, please.
Well, the villages are "easy" to find, being above-ground. You can spot them with your eyes (Or screen) and just walk over. Strongholds are more difficult to find, since they can only be accurately located by eyes of ender, but often have a better reward due to it being harder to find. So it makes sense villages are lesser-valued than strongholds.
Augh... This has been suggested a thousand times. Villagers are fine as is and offer players a ton, so we don't need to throw in all these huge buildings, we don't need to throw in all these fighting villagers, we don't need to throw in all that RPG stuff that's been done a hundred times in other games and we don't need to throw in these caste systems for villagers.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
That poor lonely search button. We really don't need to have all those huge buildings and "mayors". You'll find all of that fun stuff in an Elder Scrolls game. The villages in minecraft don't need any overhaul. At least not the ones in the suggestion.

Like many, I personally would LOVE the idea of more interactability among villagers, and the kinds of life-signs the OP suggests are great. Like the Testificates attending a service at the church every week? I love it. Maybe they could be praying to Jeb to take their arms out of those straitjackets so they can use their hands for stuff.
Uhhh, "proven"? That didn't prove anything. You linked me to another suggestion. A suggestion that focuses mostly on villager trading. While I do agree the trades could be better, that doesn't mean the villagers "aren't fine" or broken.

Villagers attending church..? That's a little bit rich for Minecraft, where the mobs are mainly simple. The AI of the mobs are still broken here and there, and making villagers go to church is just forcing up those standards and opens the door to exponentially more bugs in villager AI. Those kinds of AI tweaks handled with proper mathematical algorithms are more cost and less benefit.
Villagers being defenseless and cross-armed was intended. If fighting villagers were a good idea, we'd have that instead of the iron golem. Villages give us some decent trades, chests with good stuff and tons of crops. Expanding that will just overspoil the player.

The most current threads to do with villages/villagers are villagers themselves, my post was about a complete overhaul of the trading system, villages and villagers all as one, not just improving something like the villager defense. To reply to the person who mentioned about them being too common, since they'll be a lot better and have more loot in them they would only spawn like once every 500 chunks to balance the game out. (Jungle ones would have a chance of spawning quite commonly in jungles since they aren't particularly good.)
I can make a few examples of it to show you guys what they'd look like.

The villagers are not fine. This has been proven.
