Ok, I'm sure the idea for salt has been suggested already, but if you could just give me a second to show all my ideas for it. First of all it could be like clay, except for found on land by quarries or a large stone grouping. They could be used to preserve food. I was thinking of on the lines if you don't salt a perishable food item before not eating it after long durations (like meat) then you would get poisoned or hunger effect. I was thinking the time would be around four to five day cycles before a perishable food item would become rotten to eat. Salt could also be used to spice food to add half a hunger bar more than usual. So what do you all think?
It have a big lack of detail, it redunant and I don't like the part with the meat.
Really? I must to mine until I found salt and then I can eat my meat? No. Just no.
(No, it's near not in, and it's only needed to be preserved if you were to store it or hold on to it for long durations)
And also, it has a big lack of realsim.
Salt is destroying the stomac, so making it vital to food is just saying to the doctors: "you are idiots".
(Minecraft isn't meant to be realistic, and that's how meat was preserved before refrigeration)
The only thing that I liked is the extra 0.5 hunger point when using salt, but thats it.
Said things are in parenthesis
Edited in the beginning post extra details about how long before food would get poisoned.

8-bit Adventure got another update (June 17 2014)! Check it out from the picture below!
Sam- I left this here because I know you like MC and hope you are on this forum. this is alex, from gym and geography class. the kid with long hair and glasses. make an account and msg me if you see this.
Eh, I for one actually like the idea. (Probably because I eat too many Apples.) As it is now, Steak and Roasted Pork are slightly OP foods... this would balance it out. The only problem I see here is that it would make Chicken COMPLETELY worthless.
It's best to never ever make suggestions that involve food going bad. There's a lot to do in Minecraft, and no one wants to constantly be forced to remember the status of ALL their food. Eventually, you're gonna be busy with something in the game and forget about your food in long periods of time. It's best to just not have that.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
The only thing I like about this is the mining part.
Like you said "Minecraft is not meant to be realistic.", so let's just let our steaks last forever.
But salt could be used to craft steak and bacon.
