I've been recently working on a map. The idea is I need it to be lit up, but I don't want glowstone or torches everywhere. So what I was thinking, is to make a block that is completely transparent and can light up an area without people seeing it.
This block wouldn't be craftable or in the creative menu. You would have to do /give [player] [item] [#]
A couple other things:
-You can walk through this block, like cobwebs, but much quicker (barely noticable).
-when broken in survival, it would not take long.
-Possibly have different colored light by right clicking it?
What's wrong with glowstone, torches, and Redstone lamps? You could also use a texture pack to make torches invisible.Or, you could even use potions of night vision.

Well, I want the rooms in the map lit up without having torches and glowstone everywhere. It's a replica of a map from another game, so I don't like the look of torches where torches weren't before.
Also, it's to stop mobs from spawning so the Night vision wont work.
And finally, making the torches invisible on the texture pack will still not be good. Some torches do need to be visible.

1) For when you don't want to see the block, or for when you want to create the illusion of more lighting. Glowstone only lights up so much, but if you cluster a ton of light blocks on top of it, it makes it look like the glowstone is lighting up a larger area. Same deal with torches and whatnot.
2) Not everyone uses a texture pack, ruling out option #2. Even if the map has a specific texture pack, you don't HAVE to use it.
3) What if you want a dark area? Then you can't use night vision potions (at least without the clunky use of command blocks, I believe).
My thoughts: Yes, but in Survival and Adventure the block should simply not be interactive. You can't do any thing to it. In creative it becomes visible and can be interacted with just like a normal block (breaking, placing, etc)

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Good idea, but we wouldn't want people abusing it by incasing players in survival mode in a box of it.

Tell me your thoughts.

How would that be abuse? You can walk right through it...
