I've done this before, but that was way long ago. I've done a search earlier but they are either not detailed enough for me or they just don't have similar content.
So obviously, this is about adding in random disasters and occurrences to the game. Before I go on though, I'd like to say that this disasters thing should be an option during new world creation, like the 'Generate Structures' option, and that this be disabled for already existing worlds. So everyone can stop worrying about your precious little dirt houses being massacred. Now then, shall we begin?
This will be the format for every disaster -- Disaster: [The name of it] Occurrence: [The chances of it happening, and any prerequisites] Impact: [What it does in a nutshell] Appearance: [Umm... how it appears?] Duration: [How long it lasts]
Disaster: Tornado (you knew it was coming) Occurrence: 0.1% chance during a thunderstorm Impact: Carries gravity-affected blocks and scatters them across the landscape. Mobs and players near the tornado will take damage. (flying anvils FTW) Appearance: A subtle funnel of wind, most likely just a column of pixels, together with whatever that it has carried along. (and a flying cow maybe) Duration: Half a day
Disaster: Fissure Occurrence: 0.05% Impact: Creates multiple one ravine. (bad luck if one happens to open below you) Appearance: Ground shakes for a while, cracking sound similar to lightning Duration: Ground-shaking lasts for a minute, creation of ravine is instantaneous
Disaster: Volcano Occurrence: 0.01% for each ravine Impact: Floods ravines with lava (maybe 3-4 blocks deep) Appearance: Ground jolts for an instant, ravines fill up (no, it's not the typical cone volcano explosion) Duration: Lava lasts for 2 days, filling up and draining away each lasts half a day
Disaster: Flood Occurrence: 0.1% in swamps, 0% in deserts, 0.05% everywhere else Impact: Washes crops, redstone and reeds away just like how a bucket of water does it Appearance: A rise of 2-3 blocks in sea level Duration: Lasts 4 days
Disaster: Locust Swarm Occurrence: 0.05% Impact: Does not affect or be affected by mobs or players, but destroys all crops and leaves it comes across Appearance: A mass of pixels perhaps 4 blocks long and wide moving in a straight line Duration: A day
Disaster: Abductions Occurrence: 0.01% Impact: Mysterious abductions of a few cows. And testificates. Leaves behind a neat and round hole where the entity was removed. Appearance: ??? Duration: Happens while player is asleep. (All players asleep if in SMP)
There should also be a cooldown time after each disaster has subsided so there won't be a chance for every single disaster to occur simultaneously.
That's all I've come up with at the moment. Criticism away!
So much block updating, meaning so much lag. I dont think any computer would be good enough to stand all of the lag without crashing as even the best computers easily lose fps just by the Minecraft we have now.
Not only that, but a sandbox game like Minecraft will only be annoying to have some random occurances destroy everything.
And please, dont use the "It is optional. You dont need to use it" excuse as your loophole.
Repeating threads that usually get locked, hooraaaay.
Openly admitting that your suggestion has been done before doesn't stop it form possibly getting locked. I know I'm making a very bold and cocky statement here, but I can guarantee that almost everyone would leave the natural disasters option disabled, making it near useless to implement.
People don't want unannounced disasters to sweep through and destroy everything they built. We already have Creepers for this. People don't want locusts taking away their crops. People don't want their cow farms to shorten due to random abductions. It's annoying. Disasters are huge negatives with microscopic positives. It sucks away the fun.
But it's true. Call it a loophole or whatever, but it works like hardcore mode.
If you're insane enough, use it.
Well good point but still... It is not that no one would want to use it, but rather, no one can use it (with a smooth gameplay, at least)
-especially the fissure part, as one ravine is normally long and a fissure that creates multiple ones at once would cause massive lag and block updates.
Admittedly, the fissure may be resource demanding. That may be cancelled then.
Anything else to comment?
(And for those saying that this is useless, this is an option for those who'd like a challenge. Look at hardcore mode. Its quite useless, really, but it's a challenge.)

"Pain is weakness leaving the body" - RED and BLU Soldier
Honestly, other than the fissure and possibly the tornado, I don't think the other disasters would create excessive lag. If the flooding and volcano filled up gradually (row by row like buckets) I doubt it would cause much lag at all. And about the abductions, it happens while you're asleep so when the game changes the time to day, a chunk update to add in the holes wouldn't hurt either.
