My idea is simple. I'm freaking tired of losing old .jar files because I accidentally choose "Yes" when the game asks me if I want to update every freaking time I open the client. Can there PLEASE be a "Never ask me again" button too? Seriously, I'm still playing on a Beta 1.7.3 file, I don't want to update, and I don't want to lose my jar because I accidentally press "Yes" and update my game. I've backed up my minecraft.jar, sure, but this just gets annoying.
Seriously, it wouldn't kill anyone to add a "Don't ask me again" checkbox or something to the update screen. You could always force an update if you change your mind later.
Beta? Nice! That was definitely a while ago. How come you haven't updated? But yes I can see why that would be irritating. I'd suggest downloading the launcher to your desktop (I'm sure you have already done all this) and just playing offline always after you connect to the internet once and say no to the update. That way it wont ask you anymore. But that's all I got.

Just a question. How many other people are still playing on this version?
Beta?? Thats like 3 years old! Minecraft has moved on. And why wouldn't you update? But yes I can see why that would be irritating. Because he likes that specific version, don't get all mad just because you don't use the same version.

I wasn't mad. Simply shocked. I think it's cool that he is still playing on it. I was just curious as to why. But now we are off topic.
To be honest I wouldn't care if they added a don't show this again option. But I'm guessing it would be one of those things where they would say "so and so is working on this" but it wont be implemented for a long time. By this I mean the feature to change your ingame name.
Sure, why not? Less than a handful of people will find it useful, but nobody will be hindered by it. How do you make so it asks if you want to update again? I assume a new option in the same place you force update.
Also, why not implement auto .jar backups? Like when you click Update it automatically adds a jar to a folder that titles the .jar with the version number, and if there are any changed or new files in it, it adds a "mod" suffix. So if you had a clean .jar of 1.5 it would save as "minecraft_1.5.jar" and if it had been altered it would save as "minecraft_1.5_mod.jar"

You do realize that you would likely have to update in order to get that feature. If not the jar then likely the Launcher. So it would be entirely useless for your issue.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

If he had to just update the launcher that would be fine. You can play with the current launcher on an alpha jar - the launcher dosen't care.

My main point is that he would have to update something to get the ability to never update again.

The launcher is just a launcher. I can play using any of my .jar files going all the way back to alpha (and maybe even before, but alpha's the earliest I have personally). It would not affect my .jar file. Any changes to the launcher would require me to update it but it wouldn't affect anything. I don't have any qualms with updating my launcher (it actually does that automatically, I believe), but I don't want to lose my old .jar files. Or be asked the same damn question every time I open the game.
Oh, and to those who are asking me why I play Beta 1.7.3, it's just out of personal preference. I found one of my old back-ups and I like the game much more before the 1.8.1 and 1.0.0 updates changed just about everything, I still have an updated file that I use whenever I play multiplayer but I prefer to use 1.7.3.
That would be nice, altho you would probably need to update to get it. I didn't like it when I wanted to play a server on 1.4.somthin' when 1.5 was there. I was afarid I would press yes by accedent. So I support!
make a backup of your current jar, update, and then replace the jar.
whether you need to update is determined by checking a VERSION file. This is updated when you, well, update.Optionally you could copy the VERSION file from a install of the most recent version.
I'm not sure how the VERSION file works, but I imagine you could create a variant of it that is considered "newer" than any future version.
