One of the things I love in minecraft is being able to make the different foods, however I know that there isn't that much. My suggestion is making just a small addition, like a side-project, to enhance the cooking in the game for survival, and giving a small buff when you eat something to help out. For example:
Cake -> +10% mining speed for 3 minutes
Pumpkin Pie -> +2 health for 2 minutes
Meanwhile smaller and easier made items will give off smaller buffs;
Bread -> +1 armor (damage threshold or something, my minds gone blank sorry) for 30 seconds
Additional food items that can be made will also be either unique items, or edits of old ones, so you could make things like Apple Pie instead of just a pumpkin one, or cook the eggs from chickens to make them edible.
I know when it comes down to it, people don't really play minecraft to cook items and everything, but with the addition of the temporary boosts, it would encourage players to do that little bit extra to get these foods so they can work that bit faster, and adding to the overall experience.
I actually really like this idea. It would give a reason to eat different foods. I do hope though that those example were jut that, examples, because mining speed on cake would be pretty pointless. Cake isn't really something you eat while you're out mining since you have to place it first, so you can't really eat it on the move.
Semi-support. The buffs may need changing corresponding to the food eaten, but in general, it would FINALLY be a reason not to just mass farm one type of food.

Full support, this would give people reasons to eat different foods.
Steak, being a hearty food, could give one level 1 strength for 30 seconds, for example.
I understand what a lot are saying, and yes, the buffs are just that, examples. While people may think that potions would be easier to use for the buffs, think of it as cooking is the lesser form of potions, the food gives you less of a buff, however it would help the player out more as well to fully explore the food styles.
Also, on a side note form mass farming 1 type of food, my server at the moment has a tower that harvests 1232 wheat every few days, so mass farming can be bad.
