First of all, the villagers can expand their village. Make it like a city. They will stop expanding once it gets as big as a city. Villages can also join together and make one big village. Once their village gets large enough, they can get some villagers and train them to fight. Then they will become Knights. They can also choose a leader once they are a city. The king will have 3 Knights guarding him.

What about bad guys? They will be a Bandit. He spawns in a shack in forests. He is armed. He can join other Bandits to make a big camp. They can raid villages for supplies and will kill any villagers in sight. If a village is killed off entirely, then it will become an abandoned village. It will be destroyed with vines and mossy cobblestone. Then comes the Looter. He loots abandoned villages chests. And also your chests. But he doesn't have a weapon.

They will stop expanding once it gets as big as a city. No. This gets suggested a lot here. Villages offer players a ton, so these cities will overspoil us.Villagers being able to do tasks is something that players could manipulate into infinite gain. This is why they don't mine, farm or build.

I agree with Zippy. This sounds like another one of those things that some noobs suggest and want to turn Minecraft into some sort of RPG thing. This belongs in a mod, and I'm pretty sure has already been done in multiple of them. If you want this, use the search bar.
This cosmic dance of bursting decadence and withheld permissions twists all our arms collectively. But, if sweetness can win - and it can - then I'll still be here tomorrow, to high five you, yesterday, my friend. Peace.
If their spawning was better, perhaps but as it stands now, no support. Why, some villages are in the middle of an ocean. How will they 'expand' or 'fight' with other villagers without killing themselves?
