Ok, so allot of people have suggested water mods and features (allot is an under statement). and i never really liked the idea of tons of fish, whales, or underwater structures and clearly neither has mojang. or it would have been added 2 years ago. I for one think that the emptiness of the ocean is intentional. it has a certain feel doesn't it? floating out in the middle of an ocean biome, nothing below you and nothing around. it kinda gives minecraft its feel of "Vastness". well nothing but those few derpy squids. they look like they belong there. but there is something redundant about it. normally. you don't really think about how predictably identical all the mobs of the same type are. until you are going though an ocean biome and you see about 2 million squids that are all EXACTLY the same.
My suggestion is to add something to the ocean biomes that lets them keep there empty feel and the iconic water mod of minecraft. but gets rid of the repetitiveness. I think there should be several different variations of squids though a simple but randomized spawning sequence. this is how it would go. there are four colors, more of just a tint of color, just enough to be noticeable not bright vibrant colors like neon green or anything. the four colors are: Red, blue, green, and purple. those seem like the most aquatic colors (to me at-least) there are also 3 sizes. small, normal, and large. small squids would be slightly large then you would expect a baby squid to be, normal is the traditional size, and large is about 1.5x the size of a normal squid.
spawning would work this way: the game chooses to spawn a squid. first it randomly selects one of the four colors, then it randomly selects one of the three sizes and finally spawns the squid.
this is by no means impossible or unreasonable. the game already does the same exact thing on a regular bases. for example. when you spawn villagers with an egg, they have a change to be grown up or little and it randomly selects there profession with no slow down. so i think this would be very possible. and and something very small that would make ocean biomes more interesting or just bodies of water in general.
While this is a decent idea, I would still MUCH rather have actual underwater content. And I think it is a bit presumptuous of you to say that Mojang "clearly" doesn't like the idea of underwater content. I could have said the same thing about a dimension with a giant black dragon a year ago, and would have looked right too until they added it. Currently there isn't a good way to move around underwater (which I posted a suggestion about changing a while back) which is a huge obstacle for adding underwater content.
So, the idea is okay, but I want real content for the ocean. Not several versions of a single mob that are all fundamentally the same.

Notch mentioned adding dragons, so that wasn't a surprise, we also had reason to believe they wanted to add another dimension. the only thing notch ever said he wanted to add to oceans or water was fish, and that was WAY back when he added fishing. and that was Notch, Jeb runs it now, and he has said no such thing about adding water mobs, but he did indeed say something about them. he mentioned that underwater content AKA water mobs. would add unnecessary strain to the client and server. so yea, i think you can pretty much deduce that mojang does not want to add water content to minecraft in the near future.
Umm where do you get that idea from, its been stated several times that they want make fishing more fun which would more then likely mean more water mobs. Also why would it add strain ? the squids sure dont seem to and they are about as useles as dead bushes

what idea? the topic as a whole? as for the comment of strain it was in a Reddit QA session with Jeb(or possibly dinnerbone) . someone asked if they would add water mobs or structures. he said it would put strain on the generation code and the AI. besides. also the very fact that squids are as useless as dead bushes is allot of the reason they don't complicate things. they have a very simple AI. there are tons of squids in ocean biomes. can you imagine if each one had some complex AI? for example, i once saw a suggestion where someone wanted the to add fish that would school and split like real fish. that's cool in all but if there are HALF as many of those fish as there are squids in the current MC. then there would be some serious performance issues.
I really doubt that, have you seen mods ? FIsh, Crabs, sharks, whales are all there. I dont think they dont want to add more water mobs i just think they want to be careful what they do add, fish would be great whales ehhh not so much. Adding more those differnt kinds of squids would really do nothing for the emptyness of the oceans really.
Also this is a decent idea it just needs to be added with other mobs, heck maybe make these mobs spawn/ despawn like hostile mobs to save for the drain on resources

I'm just telling you what he said, don't know what you want me to do. lol. yes mods do it and yes it seems to work quite well, on good computers at-least but as long as i can remember Mojang has tried to bring minecraft to as many people as they can. and have you ever stopped and though. "they have had all this time to add water features, witch has been suggested over and over, and supported my many many people. why haven't they?" well there has to be some creditable reason other than "they haven't got around to it" to me it seems like most everyone who has suggested water features is holding onto the fact that they want it and not the facts that mojang has not. maybe some of the team does and some do. the only way i see it being added is as a surprise, mojang seems to announce new major features at the last second without notice. but other wise. there is next to nothing to suggest that they want to add it, and lots to suggest they do not. i think they will make ocean biomes smaller before they add coral reefs and underwater structures.
Even though I agree this is better than an average ocean-related suggestion, it's usually safer to not put that in the thread title as someone might come by and disagree. Still, I sort of agree about the emptiness of the oceans. I was never crazy about oceans being filled with all these fish, whales, sharks, jellyfish, whatever. Though I'd still like a few new additional water features. Sadly, I don't find the idea of different squid colors and sizes to be that good of an idea.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.

i added it to get peoples attention. idc if they are critics, its kinda the point :3

It doesn't always work that way, because you might anger someone who disagrees with the thread title and might develop a much more negative view of your suggestion just because of that.
