Smaller inventories wouldn't be such a bad idea now that there are iron carts and easily-made chests. They don't get used enough when I play, because my inventory is so huge... I don't see how a person can possibly carry so much, and I think it would be nice to have a challenge and HAVE to use carts while mining. So, how about having an inventory with about 9 slots normally (and maybe the ability to add wool backpacks to your character)? What do you all think? Gunpowder

No. Tools wear out too fast for us to be really limited by inventory to a larger degree right now. Get a few spare pickaxes, some shovels, health items, and you're inventory starts to look a bit limited. Add a sword, arrows, bucket of water, wood, saplings, and other stuff and you start to see how inventories can be filled so easily.
So you're suggesting we handicap ourselves just so we have to lug around carts and backpacks to level it out to where we were? We already barely have enough room in our inventories.
Just 9 slots (the action slots) would be cool, and would make the game more of a challenge when you start off.
Backpacks would also be great (maybe for use in a back slot or off-hand slot) maybe giving anywhere from double to quadruple (normal) amount of inventory space. I wouldn't want to have to use minecarts, although it would give them far more use.
We have plenty of room if you don't drag around everything in the world.
Between Tools, Mined Material, and Food, we run out of room awfully quick. Especially if you're exploring instead of staying home all day, which everyone explores.

If you are in the mines, you need a couple pieces of food, torches, spare lumber, a stack of ladders, a sword, and a shovel. Maybe a bow and arrows, and a bucket. That is ten slots, you can fit it in your quick select if you wanted. Everything else can be taken up by pickaxes and ore, even cobblestone if you want it. Plenty of room for long mining excursions.
If you are exploring, you don't need to leave room for ore, and can stock up on more food. Bring along an axe as well. Plenty of inventory space.
If you aren't carrying everything with you, the inventory is quite roomy. You just have to clear out the junk on occasion.
I agree that smaller inventories would be more interesting. I also like the idea of backpacks. My typical inventory includes nine pieces of bread, two or three of every tool (minus hoes), a stack of dirt, a stack of torches, a stack of sand, a stack of cobblestone, a stack of ladders... and I still have about ten spaces for all the extra cobblestone I'll be bringing back. Minecarts are neat, but I haven't actually USED the one I made, yet, and I don't expect to need to any time soon.
I think it would add some challenge to the game. You can't really bring a bunch of building materials, 6-7 tools, and packages of food in your pocket. It would be fun to try and minimize space. Of course, additional backpacks (made out of cloth) would have to be added along with this.
Sorta related, but I was thinking the quick-select bar should only serve as links to items in the inventory, rather than being essentially another row of inventory spaces. I don't feel too strongly about it though.
Not only would I like to see smaller inventories, I'd also like to see smaller chests and stack sizes. At the moment, we can store what feels like half a mountain in a double-chest.
Pretty cool idea. Chests don't get used alot unless you are CRAZY mining, witch is kinda hard (Unless everyone except me is lucky when mining). If he does implement a back slot for backpacks and crap, we need capes too. lol off topic.
I easily fill a large chest with a few hors of mining. Of course, I keep and use all my cobblestone, but all the misc. odds and ends can still take up quite a bit of space.
I approve of limited inventory.
9 slots however would not be enough for me.
Halving the amount of space would possibly work though, or 1/3, with the option of backpacks to expand it to about a max of 3/4's of what we have now.
take out some of the space but make everything stackable.doing that wouldnt be so bad.
I mean earlier today i had everything i needed to build a medium sized outpost, spare tools for it, and my normal inventory of items. i had half of my space still open.

or items that allow you to place more blocks in one stack.
I post too much.

A simple suggestion on geology here.
