So I been thinking that meteors will be a cool thing to add on Minecraft. Meteors will be rocks that varies in size that fall from the sky. When it crashes it makes a explosion depending how big was the meteor was and how fast the meteor went. The meteors will wield materials such as iron, redstone and a new material called Iridium when mined. Meteors usually spawn in big size but burn up in the atmosphere. Meteors won't spawn in peaceful mode. They have a 1 in 540 chance to spawn each 3 minutes. How much meteors will burn up will be adjustable before you create a world as one of the more world options in a bar labeled 'atmosphere thickness' that ranges from 0 to 200. 0 means no rocks will burn (causing larger meteorites) and 200 means that all meteors will burn up completely. Atmosphere thickness will be adjustable with cheats using this command: /atmosphere set [number from 0 to 200]. The atmosphere thickness level will be stored in level.dat so then people could adjust it without cheats with NBT explorer. Shooting stars will appear in the night sky, and if this happens, the next day will have a 1 out of 430 chance of spawning instead of the normal 540. I think this will be a nice addon to Minecraft as it will provide resources without having make a mine or find a cave. Please hit the rep button if you support.
Simple Meteors Mode:
One of the new world generation options is to make meteors spawn as the terrain generates instead of falling from the sky. They will spawn in a 1 out of a 5,000 chance for every chunk and a shooting star will decrease the chance of spawning to 1 out of 3,500. Simple mode will be adjustable using NBT explorer to edit the level.dat. Simple mode will also be able to be toggled by /togglesimplemeteormode command. Idea provided by Is2creeper.
Material Chart:
Iron: 39% spawn rate
Stone: 100% spawn rate
Diamond: 6% spawn rate
Coal: 48% spawn rate
Redstone: 24% spawn rate
Lapis Lazuli: 6% spawn rate
Iridium: 14% spawn rate
Nether Quartz: 37% spawn rate
Ice: 58% spawn rate
Iridium:
Iridium will be used as the ingredient to make music discs. For example, Iridium+green dye= music disc cat. They will have a block crafted by placing Iridium on every space of the crafting grid. The block will be used for aesthetic and storage purposes.
[crafting pics coming soon]
The Good:
-A realistic addon to Minecraft
-Iridium makes finding music discs a bit less complicated
-Provides a good mineral resource
The Bad:
-Blows up your house
-Blows up the terrain
-Blows up your pet wolf
-Very performance heavy (not that much with simple meteor mode)
Questions and Answers:
Q: What happens to a old world that does not have atmosphere thickness set?
A: This will appear as a popup :
The atmosphere thickness level was not detected in the level.dat. Please set your atmosphere thickness.
I suppose this could fit the game, it is realistic, but the metorites should be quite rare so players can't just fin a meteor everyday and mine it for tons of ores. I support.

I agree that it can hold minerals like iron and stuff, but this might not be a good idea but maybe it could be mostly made up of it's own material ( MAYBE a smeltable ore which can have it's own ingots ) which can be used to craft things like possibly tools or a brick blocks

i don't want too see my 5 hours of hardwork turn into ashes because of random meteorites
its good just for aesthetic purpose, hitting the ground... i think not...
Remember, you can set the atmosphere thickness to 200...
oh sorry i didn't see that part but like i said, tools and bricks. but maybe the spawn rate should be something like this instead:
Iridium: 69% spawn rate
Diamond: 2% spawn rate
Iron: 34% spawn rate
nether quartz: 19% spawn rate
i don't know about the other minerals , they might need to spawn a little less

Jeb said that there will be no more tool/armor tiers, metal bricks will be weird and I think your mineral suggestions are a bit too low...
Noticed the Iridium spawn rate is unrealistically high... gotta change that.
I don't think you should have to go on cheats everytime you don't your world to be destroyed with a bunch of ores everywhere. Also, a one in hunderd chance of meteors falling could destroy a large sized biome in 2 minecraft days. No support.

Well i think Iridium ( or maybe a new name since it's real ) should just be not be like an ore that you look for, but like netherrack in the nether
since you can make bricks and fences out of netherrack. so it probably *should* be be the most often spawning
How about if every 2x2 chunck space you explore have a 1/5000 chance of having a meteor in the first 2 minutes ? No more houses blown up. And if it's to performance heavy, it would be nice just to add some metors in the sky (something like stars), having a little chance of appearing
Edit: Make ores more rarer and add some ice. Maybe a chance of getting poisoned when nearby the meteorite?

Hmm... I'm not that enthusiastic about a new block type...

Made metors more rare. Also, you can use NBT explorer to edit the atmosphere thickness since it will be stored in the level.dat.
I raised the rarity of metors now.

You mean quartz should be renamed to nether metorites???
Still thats a big chance of a biome getting destroyed every week in minecraft. And why didn't awnser me ?

Okay. I will make ores more rarer and added a option to make meteors spawn like you said. Being killed by the meteor instead of poisoning is enough.
