Back around Beta 1.3, I was able to run 128x128 with GLSL shaders, Bumbmapping, Ambient Occousion on a multiplayer server at 29-60FPS. At the moment on an even better PC than I had then, I'd be lucky if I could play the game without it freezing on a 64x64 pack.
Im somewhere with you on that one, it takes about a minute to switch to a 256x256 pack and just breaks MC on 512x512

Its not your personality who makes you who you are, its your DNA.
Don't tell me that they didn't do anything to increase performance.
Maybe it is because it is Linux ?
Could it be that???
it's not Linux, Linux systems are FAR more stable than windows systems. but I have performance issues on both Linux machines (I don't know how, Linux has far less overhead than Windows does.) and Windows machines.
I had the exact same performance decreases across both systems, across 3 different computers of my own.
I know a few other people who use Linux, they all experience the Linux exclusive bugs, and they still had performance drops across multiple computers, both Linux based, and Windows.
In person, I've never met a single person who can say they've had performance increases after alpha.
I find it terribly difficult to believe when people online say they have experienced general performance increases, when half the people I know can no longer play Minecraft because it runs 5 to 10 fps MAX. even on decent machines like my laptop that can play Skyrim on high, and Metro2033 on medium/high.
but no, seriously. Why do I have to run Minecraft on low, on a machine that can play Metro 2033 Maxed at around 40FPS?
it's unlikely that it's Linux, though I know nobody at Mojang really has any experience developing on Linux (but, java is java, OS doesn't really matter when you use a cross platform language like Java) That being said, I know Mojang tends to ignore bugs that are exclusively on the Linux version (Walk keys sticking, double clicking mouse bug, things like that.)
Er, no. I have an average FPS of around 400 on max settings with GLSL shaders now, rather than the FPS of 20 on vanilla with minimum settings I use to have in beta. Exact same specs, different Minecraft versions. Sounds like it's your computer it's self, rather than Minecraft, that's getting worse.

problem is, I have tested with numerous computers, even upgraded my desktop to a better videocard. and have had other people test multiple computers as well, all with the same results. Decreased FPS since Alpha/Beta.
1# if the videocard doesn't help you... go for some more memory (RAM). (google your problems dude)
2# Is this post even about upgrades anymore? I don't think so. It's about pride now. It wasn't even a suggestion to start with.
3# I hate to see that you're saying that minecraft is going the wrong way, because I think that's totally wrong.
My computer runs mc way faster than it did in 1.8beta. I had a hard time playing back then, with lag spikes.
What about now? Runs perfect, so I don't even see a problem. Then, of course you, have gone the other way.
4# How long have it been since you've cleaned your computer? (Hardware and software). The problem might be there.
5# stop raging. It only makes your post worse. It's childish, lag of self control. You're even older than me O.O
I'm not saying that I'm an angel myself, but at least just think once more about what you're saying.

1. 8GB of RAM is more than enough for anything (yes, I've even allocated up to 2GB to minecraft, just because)
2.the discussion of upgrades was to show that even with newer up to date hardware, I still experience performance issues in minecraft.
3.then you are lucky to be one of the rare few who can still play it on the same machine. I know many people who could play back in alpha/beta, but just can't now.
4. I reformatted my laptop about a month ago, and reformatted my gaming desktop in the summer. (Though, I'll admit it's due for a reformat soon anyways.) I retired my old laptop in spring 2012.
5. I'm not even upset, I've remained calm through the entirety of the thread and kept my cool. I don't see how you feel I'm being childish and exhibiting a lack of self control.

I just have to ask... why are you constantly reformatting your computers?
Anyways, Minecraft could use some optimization and more bug fixes but that in no way means they should stop coming out with new stuff. For example, currently it puts most of it's load on your CPU (so upgrading your GPU is going to do next to nothing), and it only uses one core of your CPU. Optimizing it so it uses the GPU more and splits the computing power equally among available CPU cores would be a big start. But they can do that and add new stuff.

Yes, that's another thing I forgot to add to my first post.
why can't minecraft support multicore? many modern games do nowadays, why not Minecraft? there's functionality for it in Java coding.
a lot of the world rendering should be offput to the GPU, since GPU's have the architecture to do it more efficiently than a CPU does.
I reformat them semi-regularely to help them keep clean. there's only so much a defrag and removing old software will do. windows tends to bloat itself up after a while. As for the laptop, I reinstalled windows because I had to replace the old HDD.
