A lot of skins have armor on them (like my Teutonic Knight to the left), and you can't even see it when you're really wearing armor. In addition, some players might want to be stealthier when wearing armor.
Invisible armor: If you put any armor piece in an anvil, it has the option to make it "invisible" in addition to changing the name. That is, if you wear it, it's presumably underneath your clothing and not visible to other players and appears as an outline in your inventory.
Hopefully I'm not the only person who wants to be able to show off his game skin. I'm an Age of Empires II fan.
No, just...no. This would only benefit people on multiplayer and would be cheap and pointless.
You don't like stuff that only benefits people on multiplayer? Guess the ban command sucks then. And op. And that whole God-dang stupid server list in the menu.
Abusable. People could look as if they dont have armor at all. Why cant you just remove it?
I want to wear my armor and have its protective traits.
Considering that you'd have to use up XP on this, it's a pretty fair tradeoff. Besides, what's so overpowered about appearing to not have armor on? It doesn't help you in battle at all. In fact, I usually try to look as impressive as possible on a PvP server to weaken the other guy's confidence. It really works.
All you get is a little element of surprise for considerable loads of hard-earned XP that you could have used upgrading your weapons and armor. I'd never use my XP on that if I meant to kill people.
If your armor were completely invisible, you could be fully armored whilst using Invisibility potions. This would be entirely gamebreaking, even if you ignore the confusion it would cause when people are deciding whether or not to attack you or not.
Then perhaps "invisible" armor shouldn't be fully invisible, but rather opaque. Somewhat see-through, like frosted glass. As well as enchanted "invisible" armor still having the purple glow splashing across its surface(s). Not fully invisible, but good enough for aesthetics.

Your logic is very childish and is, at it's basics, as follows "I want some addition implemented. Who cares if you don't, we already have features that are vaguely similar, so it looks as if you're the minority. Screw off!"
I think if we eased trying to assert how mature and adult we are by calling people out in coherent ways on the internet, we could very well see this persons idea, though not thoroughly thought out, has merit to it.
Now, consider for a moment why the skin system exists. People want to look different. People chose a skin they like to see. Armor for all intents and purposes completely eliminates whatever use Skins had, as they cover 99% of the body (Except the face area, and a small section of your arms). Some people don't mind their skin being hidden, some prefer to see their skin, which is why they chose it.
One can not dismiss this notion anymore than he can dismiss yours. and to quote TV a tad, denying that people would like to see their skins would be no better than him telling you to screw off because he wants it in.
Now, Instead of making it pure invisible, about two posts up someone suggested something i was thinking about after reading the first unthought out "PVP WOULD BE BORKED" response. That is, make the armor simply opaque (That means nearly invisible in lamens terms), or give the player a purple glow such as enchanted equipment, or both.
Seeing an enemy walk up to you glowing purple would easily dismiss any claims of "Is he armored?" that might cause this feature to be broken in PVP.
Now, this comprimise fixes two things. One, players who want to see their skin can, with a modest purple glow or opaque armor... I personally prefer the glow idea, it would be more noticeable. The second is it would dismiss the brokeness this would cause on PVP Servers.
I like the idea, while it wasn't entirely thought out in its implications, with a little comprimising, it could work.
Whenever you want to show someone your skin, open your inventory, shift click your armo(u)r. Wait a little while and then shift click the armo(u)r back on.
"Opaque" means you CAN'T see through it. The word you're looking for is "transparent."
Now, I can't claim to be an authority on playing multiplayer or PVP. But any thread I see about those topics indicates that knowing what armor type other players have is VERY impotant, especially with the simple combat mechanics we have. A similar argument can be made against custom armor textures (not texture packs; like a "skin" selection for your armor). So non-support because of that.
...But I also know that individuality is very important to some (many) players. I myself am just getting into making a custom skin for myself, and would like some more options when it comes to armor. So support because of that.
So how do we address these conflicting needs? I have an idea for that:
Allow "skins" for armor and weapons. Allow, for armor pirces, anything, including transparent. This allows the individuality. Then, when you put your crosshair over a player, their transparent playername box is replaced by an opaque box with two lines. The top line is their player name. The bottom line is a five-character code representing their loadout: WHCLB (Weapon, Helmet, Chestate, Leggings, Boots). The code values would, of course, be (B)_LID (Bow, Blank/None, Iron, Diamond). White letters is ordinary equipment, purple represents an enchanted piece.
So when you see me in-game, my avatar looks like...something. When you mouse-over me, you see:
PCM_Dan
BLDII
Because I have a bow, leather hat, enchanted diamond chestplate, and iron greaves and boots.
This allows me to have an individual look, but the only ambiguity in my loadout is dxactly what enchantment is on my chestplate, shich se couldn't tell anyway.
You don't like stuff that only benefits people on multiplayer? Guess the ban command sucks then. And op. And that whole God-dang stupid server list in the menu.
Are you blind? Why would anyone care for it in singleplayer? It would be used in pvp and abused. Invisibility potions would become overpowered, and you just want it for vanity. Fuel for your arrogance.
I've posted this idea before, but I made it in the form of an actual enchantment (which is a lot more fair, because not every piece of armour could have the option of being invisible, and it would require luck).
I understand having the option on an anvil, but I think that's too easy to use for a quite powerful enchantment.
I don't really see the problem. If you are playing PvP you should treat everyone as a potential threat. Just because you couldn't see what they were wielding doesn't mean you should suddenly try to get into bed with them.
Actually, it means everything.
If someone has no armor, he can be killed off with only a few shots from long range. If the same person is wearing diamond armor, however, you're going to deal practically no damage.

Considering that Minecraft PvP is much more based around equipment than it is based in skill to the point that the fights actually involve next to no skill, yes. It is a big deal. That guy running at you with an iron sword is obviously some kind of a threat, but you can't tell how MUCH of a threat they are; they'll be a pushover if they're actually unarmored, but if they're concealing enchanted diamond armor, you'll be flattened.
I like the OP's intent but this isn't the way to do it. Perhaps there should be a separate, more revealing option to craft when making armor (consisting of, say, pauldrons, poleyn/knee pads, and the regular helmet and boots)?
And this is precisely my point. Your weakness is that you are assuming everything is as it seems, which it rarely ever is in online games like this. Even if the person wasn't wearing armor, there are other things you might not know about; the most obvious being their skill level is higher than yours offsetting the lack of armor.
...Minecraft PvP is barely skill dependent. You click on the enemy until they die. If you have better equipment, you're going to win. It's almost impossible to lose if your gear is stronger than their gear.

My thoughts exactly. "Their skill level" is barely relevant as the only skill involved is basically trying to get the first strike in whatever way possible and trying to get behind them so that they miss with their strikes.
I don't like the idea at all, I also think that further discussion on this topic is pointless and a waste of time.
Wow, really informative. All you say is "this idea sucks and nobody should ever talk about this even if it's about making the idea better". Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. You should win a Nobel prize.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

Well yeah if an abusive admin banned random innocent players then yeah it could suck.

It doesn't inherently suck. Bad admins will make any game suck somehow by at worst just not opening a server at all (and therefore not being admins).
