In real life, if you throw items at cactus, it doesn't destroy the items.
In Minecraft, cactus should not destroy items.
If you want trash bin, use lava instead. It's more effective.
This will open up more effective mob farm where you can place cactus and mobs die. Items won't be destroyed and you can pick it up. This will allow for more effective mob traps where mobs can fall into pit and stand on cactus. When they die, the items that are dropped won't be destroyed to the cactus.
Then you can collect the drops that are on cactus.
Minecraft needs a touch of realism. Not too realistic. Just the right amount.
Uh... I know no one who uses cacti as a trash can, people mostly use lava. If they was a special cactus that didnt destroy items, but did less damage, sure I'd support that. Maybe new spike blocks.
semi-support. items being destroyed by a cactus makes no sense and seems more like a glitch that no one cared to fix. on the other hand i don't really build mob grinders.
wow. i hope that was a joke.
this post sums up the MCForums community perfectly: change = bad. no matter how much sense it makes.
And this is a perfect example of idea posters, "MY IDEA IS THE BEST ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH MY OPINION IS WRONG!"
Why should cacti not destroy items? In terms of building traps, it still is horrid, whether it destroys items or not; it can't be placed side-by-side, with other blocks or even itself!
In comparison to some kind of spike block, I'm not sure why anyone would use cacti over said spike.

Also, here is an awesome suggestion I had: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1745550-biome-effects/
