This is an idea I've been toying around with in my mind, Minecraft has all these biomes but not much really sets them apart completely. If I lived 300 meters (blocks) away from my friend and I wanted to go visit him, I'd walk through about 3 biomes and nothing would feel unique about any of them. So my idea to make it more unique and explorative, is to add temperatures into minecraft and have different functions execute when temperatures change drastically.
Details:
If taiga biomes had freezing temperatures then I would have to wear cloths to protect myself from the cold to get to my friends house (as mentioned above). If I didn't wear clothes in that biome my hunger bar would deplete faster as (in realistic terms) I'm using more energy to keep warm.
In a jungle biome if I wear those same clothes then I would overheat and slow down (yes literally slow down walking), if I tried to sprint then I would lose hunger very fast.
In desert biomes players would need to wear turbans or some form of rag on their head to protect from heat and sand. Water bottles could be drinkable to sustain a new (potion) effect that would trigger if the player didnt drink water often enough. The effect would deplete hunger faster and sometimes take 1/2 a heart of damage.
Temperatures would also effect more than just the players hunger and health. If you live in a taiga biome then you need to have a furnace lit (or maybe a fireplace if Mojang wants too add more blocks) to keep the interior of your house warm.
Temperatures can effect more than just the player, if you brought cows into a desert biome and didnt provide water (just a source block nearby) they would die. Or temperatures can play a role in things like Ice and snow being placed in places that have high(er) temperatures.
The temperature API they would have to make could extend to mod developers who would find many ways temperature could be added into their mods. And not just now, but many future updates have could use the temperature feature to create different outcomes of players trying different things.
And yes the point is to make it harder to live in the world but it would make servers even more fun, single player more puzzling to gather things, mods would have more abilities to branch from, Mojang themselves would have more ways to make things interact-able, and many many more possibilities.
And for those who don't like this, if I were Mojang, I'd make this a new gamemode for extreme survivalists to attempt. (As suggested by JpmRocks)
Thank you for taking time to read my idea no matter how good you think it is.
Overall, good idea. Its been suggested quite a bit, but this is one of the best I've seen.
For the cold, make it more than just lit furnaces that provide warmth. Torches, fire, lava, all of those should provide warmth.
For the heat, the walking speed is good, but the watered cloth, ehh... Not so much. Sounds a bit like many thirst suggestions, but this one fit better.
Animals drinking water, I love it. In my opinion, all animals should eat grass (like sheep) and drink water similarly to the eating animation of sheep.
Now the last thing, which is very hypocritical of me, is for it to be its own gamemode. Something in my gut says this being in survival completely would anger A LOT of people. So, adding this as a "Temperature" gamemode would be the safest route. Or maybe even as a mod.
Instead of having a new switch the effects would probably be changed with the difficulty setting and off when in peaceful. Support! I also like the idea of clothing. Maybe you just meant armor, but I think dyable wool clothing you could wear under your armor would be neat, allowing allow you to change the way you look without having to upload a new skin.

I wouldn't want it but I could see that some people would.
Also, here is an awesome suggestion I had: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1745550-biome-effects/
No support.
