Although you can create your own skins, I always felt there was something missing. Then I realized:
Player sounds! You would upload them the same way as you upload your skin (Maybe even
on the same page). You could upload a hit sound, a death sound, and up to 3 "vocalizations"
which are activated by pressing various keys. Each sound would have a maximum volume
and length (4 seconds for vocalizations, 2 for hurts, 10 for death?) and a short cooldown for
vocalizations so you can't just spam high-pitched squealing noises.
So now, instead of just LOOKING like a giant derpfaced-cat with a really skinny neck, for
example, you could make hissing sounds when hurt and play derp noises as you walk around
and use Ganon's famous "You haven't seen the last of me!" line from that one crappy CD-I Zelda game
when you die. It's no less necessary than player skins, and I imagine it would be no less fun.
The only downside I can imagine is that people might use it to shout obscene things, but since
you can already text, build, and skin obscene things, that wouldn't be much of a change.
Assuming that it works for the same purpose of skins (SMP for the most part), main issue: Curse words. On a lesser level, this is also why I dislike in-game speaker chats.

A player skin is really tiny. You're looking at a compressed .png. A raw uncompressed WAV file rests at about 300kb/s if not higher. This means that a sound effect any longer than 3 seconds would require 1 megabyte.
This becomes taxing when you consider the amount of registered players of MC that would likewise wish to upload custom sounds.
If 1000 people uploaded a 3s death sound, then that would be 1 gigabyte. If 1 million people uploaded a 3s death sound, then you're at 1 terabyte. This is where things become prohibitive, meaning that in order to work properly, a compressed codec would have to be used instead. Instead of 300kb/s, 192 or 128kb/s would have to be used instead to acquire a more reasonable throughput, it'd be far easier to simply have a separate server handle that or simply have this as a modded system.

Yeah... However, Curse words are not a problem, as since we are using Curse for the forums, isn't everything on here technically a Curse word?
That would be abused in so many ways. You really can't compare tiny image skins to sound files that would be larger. I'm sure the Minecraft website would be overworked given that people keep uploading skins and sound files. You know someone will upload intentionally ear-destroying sounds just to troll entire servers.
Anyone remember the Left 4 Dead 1 days where people would spam one of Zoey's mind-numbing death screams? Yeah...

Nice idea. Unless if...
-Kids put "YOU B**CH" on death.
-Kids put "P*NIS" on walking step.
-Kids put annoying music on walking step.
"Love as a principle and order as the basis; progress as the goal"
Yeah, I just really wanted to sieze that opportunity.
