Ok, so the underground in Minecraft is somewhat lacking IMO. There's a ton of threads complaining about the lackluster Overworld, but what about the place we get all the cool stuff? I cam up with this a while ago and believe it would be a sensible and realistic addition to Minecraft's cave exploration.
There are two types of caverns. There's the normal one, and then there's the ravine intersection. Let's start with a normal one, shall we?
A normal cavern is an utterly MASSIVE cave room. The floor can only start at levels 6-17, so they spawn quite low. In terms of height, they are around 25-40 blocks from the floor to the ceiling. There are also stalagmites and stalactites. They are made from stone, as expected, with no dirt or gravel contained inside. The stalactites can either connect with the ground to form ceiling supports or just hang there. Stalagmites can either meet the ceiling, etc etc. Ores can and sometimes will spawn visibly in them, making them somewhat like ravines. Which brings me to the second type of cavern...
Ravine caverns are exactly the same as regular ones, except they have a short ravine running through the middle. There is also a broken-down bridge made from oak planks and fences. The ravine itself is just your average ravine.
Still too tall. They should be 25-30 blocks tall maximum. Otherwise they can still hit the bottom of Oceans (about y=47) and occasionally hit sea level. So they should range from about block 10 to about block 40.

Grr, fine. It would be awesome to stumble across a cavern by a hole in the ocean floor, but whatever.
I would support this if caves were made much rarer and if the world depth was increased by 100+ blocks to give ample room for these things.
A world depth increase would actually not be a bad idea. My original idea was for them to be 70-80 blocks in height from the floor to the ceiling, and a world depth increase would make that possible.

Anyways, opinions?

Oh shizz, really? Argh. Well, ok I'll fix it.
Edit: Fixed. And nah, I like the idea of the bridge being there for sure. I might change it if it becomes an issue.

That would require vertical chunks, though Minecraft definitely needs those too.
BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
....That would be awesome. Though I think "mining encampments" would be a more suitable term.
I agree with the first one, but what do you mean by "vertical chunks"?
