Dispensers only fire their contents a few blocks away. Even if placed very high up, a fired item will drop rapidly and land with only a small amount of horizontal distance.
What if enderpearls could be used as a way of delivering any item a great distance away? I suggest that dispenser shoot out enderpearls the same way they fire arrows, snowballs, and eggs.
When the enderpearl hits it would teleport one random item out of the dispenser and place it where the pearl landed, in item form.
You'd be able to teleport a specific items, without random chance, by using hoppers and a timed device. First place one pearl in the dispenser and shoot it. Then, before it lands, put the item you want to teleport inside. Since it'll be the only item in the dispenser it's sure to be teleported.
There would be a wide range of applications for this. For example, you could deliver items to a player in a battle arena or adventure map without having to place the dispensers directly overhead or underground.
Enderpearls are pretty hard to get normally (unless you build a farm in the end) so this would mostly be meant for adventure map creators and server admins who can spawn all the pearls they need.
But there would be uses in normal survival mode too. For example, let's say you're wandering outside your base and need an item. You could press a button and a pearl could get shot out of a tower, and summon an item on the ground near you. Expensive but handy.
I also think it would be nice if there was a block that simply fired all items a great distance, perhaps varying the distance based on redstone signal strength, but perhaps that should be a new device instead of making the dispenser do that.
The idea is good for Adventure maps but it would be so much easier to just make the /give command work on sets of coordinates in addition to players. And while it would still have some use in Survival, not enough that I think it should be implemented.
So I support the concept of moving items places for Adventure maps, just not this implementation. Half support for the idea itself though.

Being able to /give to specific coordinates is a brilliant idea! If that was added this would be mostly unnecessary.
