Thank you! Now everyone doesn't have to do math!
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Anyway, how about this: When anyone posts something lag-related, link this old post. I updated it a bit to include a 'Total results' section where I showed the lag increase/decrease of all possible view-distances. Even when looking at the higher VD, it's not too much of a lag increase, and the smaller ones are enormously less laggy.
Better yet, Calacbolg could add this to OP!
But, but, math is COOL. :'(

Curse PremiumMy Minecraft Maps -- Diversity 2 | Perhaps, the Last | Stormhaze | The L'brour Mansion | Luigi's Mansion | Gloria | Frostburn | Monstrosity | Pantheon
I've played a map of your's, was really good!
it has been exhaustively discussed, but there is a huge mistake. Nearly everyone assumed the chunks are rendered cylindric which is not correct. In fact its render square. Like Longer1996 posted.
When compared the actual square and sphere render you get this
Edit: can someone tell me how to correctly align it? its driving me crazy -.-
yes thats true
if we include only the part of the view volume which is actually visible the sphere get an even bigger advantage over the square render even on a gib VD of 20 or higher

Curse PremiumYes, that has to be taken into account too.
Actually...when do we have to have the block-data loaded on the client side?
The cases I can think of:
Right?

Curse PremiumYou know that I talked about the memory consumption of the CLIENT-side, right?
The server has the things to do you just listed.

YOU LIE!
I agree. This would completely change what Minecraft looks like on an amazing scale and they're making CARPET?!
I agree. I don't think it should load anything but the Chunk a player is in when said player is underground. (Unless they're in a large space and can see for some distance.)

I never lie.
Also, here is an awesome suggestion I had: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1745550-biome-effects/
While it allows for 3D biomes, I've discontinued that topic until further notice.
Why did you discontinue it? From what I saw in the poll it was probably really interesting.

NOW
Oh I did not know that. Well hopefully that topic will be open for more discussion soon. It did look promising.
