The assertion that lag will in fact be REDUCED is not going to sway you at all?
This Reduces Lag... Read the FAQ.
So does the nigh infinite vertical world generation mean nothing to you?
You're just rejecting this proposal because you think it won't reduce lag?
Are you saying because YOUR computer is laggy you won't support this so other people can enjoy it?
And it sounds like you're assuming you'll never get a better computer either.
Your reasons seem somewhat selfish and poorly thought out. Think before you speak.
This is MY strict opinion about your post. We're nearing one thousand replies to this topic guys!
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

Fixed!
Did you actually do ANY research, or even read the title of this thread or the advertising banner, before forming and subsequently blasting your opinion to the world?
It is!
Almost 1,000 posts! I wonder how long it will be until it gets 1,000 likes?

I know how you feel about the email spam, but I'm glad it's so popular.
Thanks for the support, I like everything about it too. (Except the fact that it isn't part of Minecraft yet...)

None. X and Z axis are already 'infinite', this proposal alters the Y axis to be exactly like them.
True and granted, though we are not creating chunks infinitely in the Y axis at this time or under the current heap limit, hence the reason for my speculation, I didn't just fall out of the wagon this mornin'..

I can follow it again because now my notifications are now minecraft forums notifications and not email notifications. :/
It IS great.
Cool.
I don't think they've responded. If they have someone should put a link to the response in this topic.

It is now… the future… the future… the future… the future. /Echo off...
Ahem. Let’s try this again. It is now the future, say five or ten years from now, when we log onto a Minecraft server with a Steem-punk theme. There are a lot of changes to Mincraft in this time, no materials, new tools, better fighting system, red stone has become even more complicated and challenging. But you are not thinking of any of these things when your avatar arrives on the spawn-point. You are on a high platform overlooking a grand play made metropolis, a bright sunny day, and filling the sky, are hundreds, perhaps thousands of craft traveling in all directions. Some of these craft are quite small, but others are massive starships, virtually floating cities onto them selves.
The really large ones are too far to be seen in any real detail. But some of the smaller ships are flying right in between the towers.
A shadow then falls over you as a larger airship just passes above you. You can clearly see the name of this proud ship, the Anna Bell. At the moment, it's upside down, so when you look up, you can see directly onto the top deck of the Anna Bell. You can clearly see other players franticly milling about on the deck.
Their activity confuses you until you see a swarm of critters, one of the newest hostile mobs, surge onto the deck. The other players begin a pitch laser battle to keep the critters contained, eventually forcing them below decks and away from view, even as the great ship continues to majestically move off across the skyline.
"Ah, there you are, Red James," Turning, you see your friend's avatar named Steinberg, standing behind you. "Glad you can make it. I think you will like it on the Ranger."
"I am happy you let me join. So where is this mighty ship?"
"It's on another server. So follow me."
Steinberg leads you to a small jumper which quickly bares you and your friend into the sky, heading towards one of the larger ships found far off in the sky. As you get closer, you can see that the ranger is a warship, complete with turrets and battle scars from previous engagements that other players busy themselves to repair. It is massive, easily a crew a thousand strong.
You see a message posted by the game, "Leaving Steam Town Server, welcome to Ranger Server."
Steinberg turns the ship and gives you a magnificent flyby from bow to stern, from above and below. It is now Steam Town that is found to be far off into the distance.
"So what do you think? Ready to join the crew? The New Mars Server has invited us to invade, I hear they have set up some new defenses and want us to try them out. It should be a lot of fun."
"Oh I was born ready," you tell your friend, "I think I am going to like it here."
Back to the real The World
Is such a world possible? Well not under the current rules of course. Indeed there are a lot of things simply not possible with the current code. The 2D chunk system is itself quite limiting, which demands compromises from the game designers. But if we launch a 3D chunk system, with infinite height and depth, many of these compromises become unnecessary.
But one of the things 3D chunks doesn’t address is the ever mythical Zeppelin Mod, which has been called "too cool for Minecraft." I think there are other technical reasons that it hasn't been implemented. But the real question I have here is, would 3D chunks be adaptable to variation of the Zeppelin Mod? And could it be made to produce a scenario I just shared with you?
Of course the real question is not if it can be done, but rather how.
I am not a coder, so I can’t even really answer that question. But I can still raise it for debate and offer some other specific questions and ideas to explore.
The epic world-ship
The Ranger would likely be a "world ship", that is this would not just be like a world unto itself, but actually a world unto itself, complete with its own server. If we can see the Ranger off in the distance from Steam Town, it would only be because the staff at Steam Town aloud their server to link up with the Ranger server.
The link allows both to share enough information as to draw a kind of thumbnail in the distance.
But how would you make something like the Ranger?
Well, this would start out as a new world all its own. Except when this world was first created, the terrain generation was turned off. So when you come to the edge of the world, the game doesn’t generate additional chunks. The players instead have to build the ship up from the one chunk that was created. As the ship is built out, the game creates new chunks to contain the creation. But of course as this is a complete world, it can support any thing found in Minecraft.
Of course, to move from Steam Town to the Ranger, you have to change servers.
But world ships may have restrictions on their interactions. If there is a limit to how "close" they are allowed to approach, you don't have to do things like calculate for collisions, which I overtly included in the game.
This server-to-server contact would not be that hard to code, and there is no reason why it couldn't be implemented now.
The Heavy Jump-craft
But what about the smaller ships, or rather those that are not "world ships", like the one we saw under critter attack?
Like any other structure in Minecraft, this one was probably built some where in The World of Steam Town. But not necessarily. It could have been built on another server and then turned into some kind of file and moved here, more than likely coming from "outer space." This is a Jump-craft, because it is made to jump from one linked server to another. But unlike the Ranger, this jump-craft is truly found in the Steam Town server and is under the control and jurisdiction of the staff of Steam Town.
Setting aside the risks this brings from grievers, how could this interaction be possible?
Well, it may still be found in a kind of world-file, a set of chunks that operate independently from The World. But as the Anna Bell is actually a part of the server, it can directly interact with Steam Town in a way that The Ranger couldn’t. So instead of computing an interaction on a block-by-block bases, the set of chunks could be calculated collectively.
