It should not be a large leap, it is very easy to convert old worlds to the new chunk system and a team of programmers at Mojang could program this in no time at all, someone already made this on his own http://www.minecraft...ds/#CubicChunks, so if you have multiple people working on it...
Meanwhile...
Y U NO ADD (bbcode {represent})??
Seriously, can you add it to this post to further promote the 'supporter' bits?
OcD Simple Add-On!
Err... It is added, and it always has been.
It would, however, require an overhaul of the chunk and lighting system, as well as having Minecraft recognize and convert Anvil worlds. But, just because Mojang failed once on this doesn't mean that it will fail again.
I don't see the 'We love this thread' part of the original post...
OcD Simple Add-On!
1. You end up with an unloaded chunk causing shadows. Literally impossible in Minecraft.
2. You end up with no shadow when that chunk isn't loaded and a shadow when that chunk is loaded. Bad.
3. You end up with no shadow even when the chunk is loaded. Worse.
Bear Grylls will be sure chasing your avatar.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Oh god
I put in a table of contents and people still miss the third longest section of the OP..I'm scared.
oh god oh god why
I can feel my ability to form a snappy response being drained away along with my common sense by the low-common-sense-pressure void that is above. Oh wait, there it is. Still going kooky though.
Wait... Did you said... Oh yeah the Heightmap. I forgot about that. Sorry.

+1 support.
It's the flying cutlery that stresses me out.

Curse PremiumJust remove these two options, they are complete nonsense!
Who the heck wouldn't wan't more/better performance?
I think these votes are made by accident.
Just remove them.

PS: If someone think's these option's should stay, then that person should have a very good explanation why not.
Anyone can delete their vote and fix a mistake if they make one. Those options are there because they prove some people aren't reading.
Edit: I had a potentially genius idea, or a stupid one.
When a chunk would be unloaded, a simplified mesh of it could be saved to a global 3D model, a spherical section of which would be rendered around the view sphere. Much more realistic sunlight could be accomplished with this via raytracing, and much better sky rendering would come alongside it.
If it were optimized well, we could have huge view distances of 1024 or even more, like 4096 blocks. All of you that would know better than I do, would this work?
are you implying minecraft should have an ACTUAL rendering and lighting engine? with meshes and LOD?
blasphemy!
mojang jokes aside, yes that is how it should be handled, with saved meshes for distant landscape, but mojang hasn't exactly been smart about many aspects of minecraft.
You won't get your way by insulting Mojang, so please don't.
Or make it like the Citadel from the Half-Life 2, which is a skybox(sort of), then rendered with some bigger scale. The skybox could be updated by passing on midnight, or by sleeping.

Well yeah, each chunk would make up a single part of a single global 3D model(Or one 3D model for every 3DRegion file). Theoretically you could expand the view distance by large degrees with more minimal impact on performance.
This has also increase my hope for Minecraft's future! Read it! All of it! Worth it!
