(Yes I am 2 years late)
How would things that spawn at certain levels work in a 30 000 000 high block world? Obviously slimes have to spawn higher then 40. Would you multiply the number equally? Slimes would therefore spawn at 4687500 and below. Even thought it's proportionately the same, that's kinda takes away from the feeling of them only spawning up to a point. That's also gonna be really hard to get to, seeing as sea level spawn are going to be millions above that.
Which brings up how infinite worlds or even worlds thousands of blocks high... fall apart functionally. Getting around would become insane, and since certain biomes are flat, they be around sea level... quite possible thousands or millions of blocks from your house. Getting down to get cave resources would be more or less impossible.
So I support it, seeing as it's a superior system in many ways, and obviously infinite worlds being an option wouldn't hurt, but I'd say anything over a few thousand blocks high starts to become functionally useless.
As for "building my home at 30 000 000 y", well, who exactly makes you build it there? I mean as is if you build it near height limit it's pretty annoying to get down (up actually, because falling in the water is pretty fast), guess why I don't do that?
it wouldn't stretch the world generation. the world would more or less generate normally, but u would just hav empty space going up, and that wouldn't cause too much lag bc, like he said, empty chunks will hav a bit as 0, meaning it wont save
but i just found a flaw with not saving an empty chunk, if the world gen changes, like if a mod is added or the game updates, those chunks could possibly be filled and give a bad look, like a floating cube in the middle of ur large space base or something next to ur house wen it wasn't there
Yes, but because of this your only realistically going to be able to use a small amount of an infinite world.
Which is exactly as it is now ^^ Do you really explore every chunk of minecraft world now? Doubt it.
So technically it's not really problem.
This is easy to avoid - while the chunk itself will be empty you save the coordinates of the chunk, but without any actual data, so the game sees that the chunk exists but it is empty. In fact, it already does this - create a Superflat world with a preset to only generate air - the chunks are totally empty, right? Well, if you look in the world folder you'll see region files created. Similarly, use MCEdit to delete all of the blocks in a chunk (not the chunk itself, fill it with air) and you'll be left with a hole in the ground that doesn't fill itself, despite being "empty".
Also, nonexistent chunks must be avoided because the game otherwise has to rerun the terrain generation code, the biggest strain on the server, every time they are loaded as otherwise it can't tell if it is truly empty; even empty chunks can have a significant performance impact as it has to calculate the noise for terrain, check a range of chunks for nearby caves and structures that might extend into it, etc (the latter is an area where Cubic Chunks performs worse without major code rewrites, as currently the game checks a range of +/- 8 chunks, 289 chunks; making this 3D is another factor of 17 in resource usage, with the size of chunks having little effect).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
