How does that use more data? I mean, yea, the name's longer, but other than that, I don't see how it would radically change the size required to store blocks.
The text string "minecraft:stone" is 15 bytes of storage.
15 bytes can store values of up to 1329227995784915872903807060280344575, including 0.
Since we don't have anywhere near 1329227995784915872903807060280344576 total, let alone unique (i.e. not including damage values, like different colors of wool) block/item IDs, this is guaranteed to use more space.
Even just "stone" uses 5 bytes, which still holds up to 1099511627775.
Unless "minecraft:stone" or whatever longer block names that are used are stored in a different manner that I'm not aware of (and I'm really not the right person to ask), but I think this is the type of point that was trying to be gotten across in aaronfranke's post, so yeah.

FWIW, block IDs are still being stored in a numerical format as of 14w08a, using MCEdit to analyze a world, only item IDs are saved as strings, which makes sense; it is easy to use a table (saved in the world save files) to convert between numerical IDs in the save files and string IDs in-game (they could have done that for item IDs as well, saving a bit of space; not actually sure if this is what is being done of if block IDs are still entirely numeric except for commands and the like).
Also, the game compresses chunk data; for example, when I use MCMap on my world the size it shows ("terrain takes up xxx MB") is far larger than the size on disk; repeated data is easy to compress (my current world has 38 MB of region files for the Overworld, which takes up 370 MB/385 million blocks, and over 3/4 of those blocks are non-air blocks because of how I modified terrain generation, so empty chunk sections doesn't explain the difference).
TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
Got it.
However, some serious trolls could occur. That's my only beef.
Someone could teleport you one million blocks high in a pillar of cobwebs.
Then you're boned, because if they are a bully admin or something and disable your to commands, it will take you almost four months of staying logged in and floating downwards, to be free.
Partial support.
We have trolls nomatter what. I could make a 255-tall spiderweb tower, have you fall into the void at the bottom and have you respawn at the top to do the same thing. Besides, this would be the fault of the user and not of the system, so it is not a disadvantage of this system.
I could do it without the cobweb. Just give me gamemode 1 and op for 10 min.
Sorry bout the double post.
I was thinking more along the lines of an execute command that continually placed cobwebs around the person and one that tp'd them to y=255 once they reach y=2 or just one that gives them a hyper regen effect and then tosses them into the void.

If you need help deciding what computer to buy for Minecraft, I'll help!
This has already been addressed, both on this topic thread and by Mojang. The Nether and the End are separate dimensions, they don't exist bellow and above the overworld.
At least Mojang employees are actually telling us some of what they're doing and planning.
I agree. I really like your icon, by the way.
I really like that idea. I'm not saying it should be implemented, but I really like it.

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

...But until it IS implemented, I don't suppose Barteks2x would release his/her mod update to tide us over?
As far as we know, the proof-of-concept mod is far from complete. But I don't think there's any good reason for him to not release the mod when it's finished. It would be a boon to this suggestion if many people started using the mod individually, and in modpacks.
