Technically, It is infinite. HOWEVER, after a certain distance, you can no longer walk through air as it becomes SOLID. THis distance is very big and even after air becomes solid, blocks generate so technically it is infinite. Also, you almost have 4096 replies!

Curse PremiumJust about any sane person hates it when people quote the OP-Post, as it blows up the size of the current page.
So don't do that, please.
@Pentrit: "I don't quite know how the current terrain generator works.".
Terrain is generated using DiamondSquare for the Biomes and Perlin-Noise for the Terrain itself.
Yes, you heard right: Perlin-Noise, not Simplex-Noise.
The most basic formula is this:
And here is a surprise:
It took me a whole two hours to actually understand how the world-generator works in its basics, and I am absolutely unable to explain how it works.
That's how damn complex it is. (Code without comments is not really possible to understand)
Have a nice day.

PS:
Did I ever mention that I am working on my own voxel-engine which actually uses cubical chunks...? Sky-Lighting is my main-problem too right now.
By the 1200 something block view image, does that mean you will be able to use farther render distances?
The EULA "changes" will not end minecraft servers.
not sure if this was mentioned but could have it so no chuck below ground surface loaded if above ground. Could cut loaded chucks in half if using the spherical render.
maybe change it so water would be y 0. Makes knowing where you are a little simpler.
Mystical floating islands and "The Forgotten Sky"
The Mystical floating islands start generating at y=400, and look like, well, islands. What is so special about these islands is that any ore can generate at any level in these islands, meaning that you can find diamonds on the surface of these islands.(note: these islands will not cast massive shadows)
The Forgotten Sky: The Forgotten Sky is a new biome that begins to generate at y=1000. The Forgotten Sky Consists of MASSIVE sky islands, much bigger than the regular ones found lower down, (I'm talking like 1000+ x 1000+ islands) these islands are very unique in the fact that they are like a whole other world up there, complete with mountains, caves and temples. The grass up there is called "Forgotten Grass" and is very green (Same color as Jungle Grass) and it keeps its color no matter what biome it is in. The trees are made of "SkyLogs",which look like oak logs, except they shimmer and produce a small amount of light, and "Forgotten Leaves, which behave similar to "Forgotten Grass" but they also give off light.
The Forgotten Sky does not have the usual over-world world monsters. and is instead inhabited mostly by Goblins(neutral), Angels(neutral), arch angels(neutral), Demons(Hostile), and Ghasts(Hostile).(Note: the Ghasts are fairly rare spawns)
Ores: Rare ores are a fair bit more common in The Forgotten Sky.
Edit: I forgot to mention that The Forgotten Sky doesn't cast a shadow either.
It wouldn't change anything about the terrain generation. However, it would make "giant mountains that go thousands of blocks into the sky" possible with some tweaking of the terrain generation. To be honest, the main reason I'm supporting this is to see those mountains, or those vast chasms.
Those ideas won't be used. I'm not saying I like or dislike those ideas, I'm just saying they can't be used.
This is a suggestion to optimize the Chunk system, not change the terrain generation.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
-The Gods Of The Copybook Headings, by Rudyard Kipling.
Is Minecraft terrain generator similar to this? (the very start looks like a heightmap to me)
EDIT: If you're wondering.
OcD Simple Add-On!
Nothing yet, but I'll keep looking.
Btw, the poll's fixed.
Yes. Yes it is.

Retired StaffJust coming in halfway through here so I may be saying something completely random. If you're generating infinitely high terrain that has overhangs (No overhangs in generation would work, as height map could always be generated as player places blocks) you have two options:
1. Have every objects shadow end a set distance below it, regardless of width. Very unrealistic, not very good.
2. Realize that because the terrain is infinitely high, there will inevitably be blocks overhead, and therefore all will be pitch black with no sunlight. So debating light at all is really pointless at that point.
I also might point out that Earth does not have infinite terrain. In fact, people have purposely avoided building floating islands in the atmosphere.
