Oh, they're doing all kinds of things with 1.7, and they are definitely adding lighting and rendering changes to 1.7. Did you see all those Filter/shading options they've added in the "Secret Options"? And the new Launcher itself is designed to make using modded minecraft versions easier to use, though they could still do better in my opinion.

Yeah, the vanilla minecraft version may likely only increase the height. I can easily see that happening.
Just to be fair, the original Cubic Chunks Mod did auto-replace the original bottom layer of Bedrock with regular stone so that people could keep going down. So that might be a little of the confusion. It was, however, planned that future versions would have altered height worlds listed as an actual "World-Type" once that was added to Minecraft. Plus; that many aspects of even the fundamentals would become World Generation Options such as what level to put a Bedrock layer if any and what the allowed height would be (even though the CC engine itself could still do more).
The first available test versions of the new CC Mod may not have such options, not fully anyway, but those test versions will only be released so that you can all play (and test) earlier, so hopefully you all won't be too judgmental about simple "options" like that at first. After all, options like that will be easier to add later than the Core Height/Depth functionality that needs to be shoe-horned into Minecraft now, heh heh.
Again, Calacbolg is referring to the vanilla minecraft suggestion.
The core principle of the mod also is to only alter the Vertical Freedom of players, creators and modders. The engine itself does allow equally greater depth as well. I see no reason though why there cannot be an option, even if default, to keep the original bedrock if that is what people want.
I suspect that people may be concerned about large terrain too. Let me quickly go over what happened with the original Cubic Chunks Mod in regards to that:
Robinton was able to both alter the terrain generator core to be compatible with his Cubic engine yet also still put out "Normal" terrain for worlds. Most all versions of the CC Mod used that, though there was a special version that used some Cubic-modified code from the PTM Phoenix Terrain Mod to create terrain up to 4096m high for testing.
It was solidly agreed upon that there should, in the future, be World Generation options for CC worlds that allowed people to create traditional worlds that just had the added height/depth added as well as options for variable height terrain + more.
* The whole point, as Calacbolg stated, is to give everyone new Vertical Freedom. Anything else should be optional and not forced on anyone. You should be free to have what otherwise is a completely normal world, including normal bedrock, but a FAR greater freedom of height if that is what you want. And those who want to burrow into hidden underground worlds of wonder, provisions for such possibilities and compatibility with custom modding for them would be ideal (even if not fully implemented at start).
Don't worry folks; unlike some mods which feel the need to force unrelated random mobs etc on you when all you want is the core function of the mod, the Cubic Chunks Mod is all about Freedom! Calacbolg has shown agreement with this idea of purity of focus, you have no idea how lucky you are for that.

I do not expect Mojang to implement this until the proof-of-concept mod is released. Then they can just use the code from it, add Cubic Chunks to Minecraft, and the world will be a better place.

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

Thank god for that! You have no idea how many mods Ive tried and then gotten sick of within hours because they were all op, like "lets give the player diamond-tier armor if they use leather and ink sacks!" "yea! thats a great idea, because its totally not op as *bleep* at all!" I do know how lucky we are to have Calcablog's input.
Note: I am exhausted, and have had a super stressful past few weeks, so I may be a bit more irritable than usual, and more prone to derping out.
Ahh, I see. Very well done. To the rest of you, I was never trying to argue, just point out the possibilities and understand more. Besides I never claimed to utterly hate this idea.

I think it is fantastic that people are truly looking into improving the game performance. Mojang can learn a lot from the modding community, I think if they implement some things that modders do, it should not be frowned on but praised. Their are VERY talented modders out there who do amazing things. It almost seems like people who do the behind the scenes stuff don't get enough credit because they don't stand out to the average user. The rendering and world gen highly interests me and I enjoy reading about it.
Hopping on the discussion of the xray, nerfing: I would never use an xray mod for in-game mining and playing. I do use them extensively for testing ore distribution and bugs and such, working as a blockfinder for those ores that spawn at a tenth of the rate of diamond =P.
I support this =)
We were all just visited by one of the Legends of Cubic Chunks folks. Nocte long ago fully implemented a completely successful Cubic Chunks system in his C++ Voxel framework HexaHedra. He also helped Robinton to revamp the original CC world save format into an immensely more compact and faster one as well as other important on-going contributions.
If any of you are interested in quickly and easily experiencing how very smooth and wonderful navigating a wide open Cubic Chunks world can be (when properly implemented) then please head over to the HexaHedra forum and download the newest test version and give Nocte some feedback to help him with it's development. His server also has a fun voxel city for you to explore.
It's as easy as downloading it's installer and running it, that's it! It has nothing to do with Minecraft and won't affect it. Enjoy!!

Exactly. It's open source so feel free to compile it for Mac if you want. Currently it's in development. The current version is available for Windows and there are instructions for Linux.

*Im a biologist, not a comp-sci person, so I forgive me if I make some mistakes*
Translation:
Anvil stores blocks by loading a whole chunk (16x16x256), but also checks whether or not a section (CC (16x16x16)) is air or not. The result is less calculations being sent, and it ends up being faster. Unlike with CC, Anvil can't load or store the individual CCs, so it cant reach its full potential of virtually infinite height.
Did I make any mistakes?
Maybe it would be changeable by the server admins, that way it doesn't break existing builds in the spawn chunks.
Read the op before posting please. Ignorant posts like yours can cause people to be misinformed and not see what this mod has to offer.
It should be, this mod as far as I know will only modify chunks, and will not change world generation.
Yes, this does change the amount of loaded chunks, BUT the chunks are 16x smaller and you can optimize loading and efficiency of these small segments. The efficiency of this system more than doubles my performance in MC. Unless your farms extend from bedrock to height limit and take up the entire chunk, then you're wrong, this would allow more farm area to be loaded due to the ability to selectively load chunks.
Spawn chunks could and would continue to exist, actually no changes would be required to the spawn chunks code I believe, because it measures chunk distance from spawn. This would lag MUCH LESS than the current system, and yes the system CAN change that, if you've fooled around with the Multiverse bukkit plugin, you'd know that you can disable spawn chunk loading in any world you wish, and not process the world when no chunks are loaded in it.
The mod currently has a broken-looking terrain generator because Barteks2x had to disable some things in the meantime because their generation was based off of chunks and does not work properly with CC until we change the code. If you've watched my video, you'll see what it looks like. There is also another generator which attempts to generate biomes, but only generates the 'biomes', so only things like grass color change.
