The void isn't removed, it just CAN be.
The mod should be released first. Give them something to look at and maybe show off in a video. Imagine what Sethbling could do with cubic chunks...
In the case of the End, infinite terrain might mean that unlimited islands are generated so that one would eventually crash into an island and die, though the player may end up falling for a ridiculous amount of time regardless (depending on how often those islands appear) at least it would not be forever.
Note that the void could just be lowered a few thousand blocks instead of removed entirely. I think that would be the better situation for the End.
If you remove the void but don't add generation below Y0, then you fall forever. In a completely vanilla situation, this will never occur, period.
I think this would be our best chance for implementation. I suggested this back in June, but it didn't really catch on.
I agree. Sethbling would probably be able to understand it better than most other Youtubers, and would therefore require the least amount of convincing. He may even have some ideas to improve it. (I think his technical knowledge extends that far, but I'm not sure.)
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

I will repeat, falling forever will never, ever, come up in a vanilla situation.
Automatically killing the player is a bad solution for more than one reason. First of all, what if the player is in creative mode? The only time a creative player should be dying is if they use /kill. Second of all, there are too many variables. Water and cobwebs completely negate fall damage. Resistance V does the same.
There's absolutely no need to implement a system with many glaring, unfixable flaws for an issue that will never occur. In the OP, it's stated the Void can be moved via associated NBT data tag. Map makers could make errors that cause eternal falling, but it's their job to fix their map, not the devs' job.
Actually just to prevent possible infinite-falling problems one could make it so that a player who reaches maximum falling speed (or has reached it for a certain time) starts losing half a heart per second (because of friction). Since this counts as damage and not as an instant kill it will not affect creative users.
From the wiki:
"Falling into the Void and the /kill command are the only possible ways to die in Creative mode.[1]"

This is my baby, please support her and get her into vanilla:
Not to mention, maps specifically designed with long drops: Think Dropper, Dropper 2.
How about the overworld (maybe also nether) are the only places to be infinite, and the end has a void. Problem = solved.

Thats the idea.
Yes, I agree. Amplified terrain generation is interesting, but not "realistic" enough.
