So, sometimes after I've promised myself that I will stop playing creative and stick to survival on the house I've just built, I wuss out and just /gamemode creative. Do you think for people like me that have no self control, there should be some way to turn cheats off? I was thinking that, just like the way you can change the name of the world, there could be a "Edit Settings" button where you can change what's allowed in your world.
I think that the Cheats should be separated entirely from the game. There should be a survival client and a creative client. But that's only because I don't posses the ability to refuse cheating when it's so easily available by default.
Personally, I have no problem with cheating. In moderation. No, not just spawning tons of stuff into your inventory (unless you are making a personal challenge map) but for useful purposes.
Lose your way while wandering, why not switch and fly back. Even though its your fault for not leaving a breadcrumb trail.
Still can't find it? Set KeepInventory and kill yourself, provided your spawn is still at home.
Start off in an area void of all animals and none seem to spawn naturally? Spawn in a few with eggs.
That kind of thing. True, it is Minecraft. There is no wrong way to play the game. Unless you define it as wrong yourself.

Jumping on the bandwagon here as I've seen quite a few of these.
I figured I'd score as either Rogue or Ranger as those are my favorite ways to play.
Why use cheat when you dont wana do? learn to controll yoursellf.
Sadly, that isn't easy for everyone. I would support a new Gamerule to turn off cheats. Something like
/gamerule enableCheats <true/false>
That way you could just switch to Survival and and then enter "/gamerule enableCheats false" to permanently disable cheats for that world.
But let's be honest here. Anyone who is too afraid or weak willed that they can't stay in Survival when given the option is going to just switch to Peaceful whenever things get rough for them. And then they come and suggest that you shouldn't be able to change the difficulty after you start the game. And if that gets added, Single Player Commands is just a few mouse clicks away. And then we get a suggestion about how you can make so the game doesn't allow mods on specific worlds.
It's a slippery slope that is unavoidable with people who can't resist the urge to cheat and then hate that they do. If you can't resist the urge to make the game easier, it doesn't really matter what they put in place to try and prevent you from making it easier. So i support this because it would be incredibly useful for people who make Adventure maps and the like, but not for the reasons in the OP. Nothing will stop someone who compulsively makes the game as easy as possible from finding other ways to make the game easier.

There is a way to enable/disable cheats. If you use a tool like NBTExplorer you can change the value of allowCommands. A 1 enables Cheats and a 0 disables them. There is also an option called GameType which works just like the command (you must use the numeric values and if commands are disabled it doesn't seem to do anything but say it's in creative mode). It would be nice to see an official tool for this or an option within World Select.
Note 1: Changing the option in this way is semi-permanant. To my knowledge you have to close Minecraft to make the change (or at least the World).
Note 2: I'm a bit new to MC but I'm sure there's other ways to do this as well since users have hosted MC servers for a long time and have some way of setting the options for that. As I said I'm new and I've never done it that way before.

Agreed. I like using cheats, but only to build redstone things to mess around with. I'm sure they're even more important to redstoners, and this would make adventure-map-building a tad easier.

If it's too late to click the 'Allow cheats' box, change the value in NBTedit.
