I've been kinda underwhelmed by my dog's help. He just rams into enemies like an idiot, and doesn't seem to do much damage. I propose that you should be able to give your dog swords. You cannot give them bows, since they don't even have thumbs.
How this works is that if you right click on a tamed dog with your sword, it shows the sword in the dogs mouth. Then, he will do the amount of damage that sword does. I think this could be useful for going into a big fight, or even used as bosses for adventure maps.

Nice but I think it might be better to give them stronger, sharper teeth? Like craft a dog tooth with your ingredients(a sword plus something else.) then put the enhanced tooth in its mouth by right clicking it. Right-clicking this dog with an empty slot will give back your tooth.
The dog will change its teeth color based on the tooth's material.
How about it? It's slightly more realistic(well, ok, you can't really put extra teeth) and it might be better.

They can do about 2 hearts worth of damage to 'enemies' in Normal. So a Wooden enhanced tooth will be useless, and the Wooden Sword too.

The idea is sound, but I never try to suggest new items unless absolutely needed. If enough people want, I'll change the post.
No new items, new items, it doesn't really matter that much. Either way, you'll need to edit the code to fix and improve.(that is, if Mojang accepts this idea)
Still, make the tooth/sword not too easy to get, since multiple toothed(or sworded, whatever) wolves will make the game too easy...

I don't know about you, but wolves are pretty rare.

It's strange you would recommend giving them swords, but then mention wolves have no thumbs after that. Though I do support a small buff for tamed wolves, I don't think swords would be the way to go. Wolves can also get some extremely good buffs from the proper splash potions.

I said the sword would be in the mouth, but bows can't be operated like that. Anyway, this is for earlier in game when you don't have potions.

Right, don't know how I missed that part. Still, that's a little weird. At first, I thought it was gonna be strapped to its back or something.
Giving a wolf a sword is still a little random to me, but I do agree how dumb a wolf's attacks can be, where it's taking damage and giving damage within the exact same motion. Like two mindless entities bumping into each other until one dies. I'm still on the fence of whether I support or not, as I'm not a big wolf user.

How about the sword damage is reduced half a heart for every dog with a sword?

Tame two wolves (wolves appear in packs of 2 to 5). You now have INFINITE WOLVES. Mazeltov.
