I would like to suggest making written books function more like maps, in that you can clone them (by combining a book and quill with a written book) and display their contents in item frames. This would provide a method of enhanced signage for detailed information, and make them more relevant for trading and sharing of information on SMP servers (make copies of a book to give/sell to other players)
For item frames, it could display either just the first page, or make it so that you can page through it by right-clicking (instead of rotating the view)
Imagine some potential new uses:
Displaying and sharing crafting/brewing recipes.
Displaying or distributing map legends with maps.
Recording and displaying coordinates of geographical features.
Use as an info kiosk for server rules, guidelines, or information at the spawn.
Additionally, it would be neat if book shelves could be used as chests for storing written books, and to have an alternative skin with the 'glow' effect to indicate when they have written books inside them. It seems silly putting your books in a chest in a library instead of on the shelf.
Sounds really neat, but really, what is the advantage over just using a sign?
You can fit a lot more information on a written book, especially if you're able to page through it and display multiple pages. There's also formatting, and aesthetic properties.
Signs would still be useful as they can be free-standing, require less time/resources to make, and have larger/more visible lettering from a distance.
Yes, it is kinda cool. Written books can be traded at villages. Lecterns could be introduced for easy display of the books, instead of item frames. Publishing companies could be introduced for effect in SMP games. Your only problem, is that I don't think you are allowed to bump articles.

Adding lecterns would be neat, but would require a lot more development work than just lumping them into the existing functionality of item frames (which we know is there thanks to maps). Little steps!
That said, it would also be nice if item frames could be placed on horizontal surfaces of blocks.

It's relly hard to write a few copies of a book, and cloning them would be perfect!
The idea of actually trading information in a big amount sounds great...
Full support.
