First off, this will NOT be for a "gloves" armor slot. None of that. Also, please fill out the poll at the end of reading, I want to improve this suggestion, but I need external help with doing so.
So, whilst walking through my new survival world, I was attacked by a small group of monsters. Unfortunately, I had no sword, so I was forced to defeat using my fists. Then it hit me, there should be a new tier to hand-to-hand/bow/bomb/potion combat. Thus, the boxing glove was conceived.
So, this boxing glove would be crafted as if making a block of leather; nine leather in box shape in a crafting table. Pretty early game stuff.
The boxing glove would have a stronger attack than a stone sword, and have a stronger block, but a slower attack rate. The purpose to this would be to have a new kind of melee combat, that adds defense as well as offense.
So, what do you guys think? Any constructive ideas to add?
But...
Iron is a very very common ore, by chance people would find Iron before their first cow.
So unless Iron is much rarer, or cows are much common/Leather drops are more common, we can't have this.
Another thing I like to point out is that people will no doubt save their leather for books or something.
I'm not saying I hate the idea, just pointing a few things out.

Aye that's true... I'll be adding a poll, so more community input is added.
An interesting idea, although maybe they should just be defined as "Combat Gloves" rather than boxing gloves, just an abrupt idea there. However, I do think that they should not be stronger than a stone sword, let alone having a better block. Also a slower attack rate...? I'd think maybe a faster attack rate because they are boxing gloves, therefore you would have two of them, would you not? Anyway, I know I kinda tore your idea apart, and suggested fixes changes that might be better to have made, it is quite original (from what I know anyway), and it would be kinda cool to have in game. Half support.
Edit: Also, you might want to change the recipe too, just take the one leather out of the center, perhaps to have a spot for a hand, not really a big deal though.
