I think a magnet could have some interesting applications in MC.
It could add a whole new level of variety to redstone contraptions.
I was thinking the material would be an ore, that spawns about the same as gold, you craft it into a block with about 3 pieces of the ore, some wooden planks and cobblestone/smooth stone.
The magnet could attract metal materials, such as iron, from a variable distance, possibly by the level of power it was getting from a redstone circuit. So the magnet would be stronger if placed right next to a redstone torch, and weaker placed 10 blocks down a redstone wire trial. the magnet could attract things in a straight path, and a diagonal path or in a radius based on the power its receiving from a redstone circuit.
you could also make magnetic pistons/sticky pistons, by adding one piece of ore to the formula, so that the magnet will pull the piston to itself to re-position the piston.
If you guys like the idea, or think of some other properties the magnets could have, leave a reply! :]
I came here expecting a troll-post, but it turned out to be so much more. Sadly, this won't get much traction because of how "mod" sounding it is. Heck, I support fully (with a few changes) but many people won't like the idea of "false-modding" vanilla minecraft like that.
I didn't really think it sounded like a mod, but you're actually kinda right. But if someone did make it a mod that would be pretty cool regardless.
anyway, what kind of changes were you thinking of? i'd love to hear them.
i was thinking maybe a moving platform where the magnet pulls the platform while you stand on it, basically a rail system but not as long.
maybe you could pull a block with redstone on it out of a circuit into a different contraption to activate it and deactivate the other?
Welcome to the Forums! you seem to have put some effort into this suggestion, but let me help you out here. The ore you are thinking of is Neodymium - the most magnetic element. It has a silver color in appearance - the color of ore most requested by players. Your implementation seems to be a bit lacking, so here is how I would do it:
When mined (via Iron Pickaxe), it drops the block itself. It can then be smelted into a Neodymium Ingot. Craft 9 of them into a Magnet Block.
The Magnet Block draws all items in a spherical radius (EVEN UP!), depending on the signal strength. Right-clicking the block will open a GUI with one slot (and your inventory, obviously). When an item is placed inside, it will filter to that item only. Here is a practical example:
You can add two Magnets to an auto wheat farm - one filtered to Wheat and another to Seeds. The Wheat magnet pulls the desired loot (Wheat) toward the collection bin. The Seeds magnet pulls the Seeds to a Hopper, which then loads into dispensers to re-plant the Seeds.

use your imagination!
