Hey guys! I love all the support this is getting and how it's being picked up... It's the best idea I've heard for minecraft in a long time.
I (sadly) agree that they should be killable/loseable in some way... Just like diamond armor, all good things must have an end or a risk factor..
Maybe if they get too injured or if you attack them too many times, they fly away instead of dying? And you have to repeat the process all over again?
Which leads me to another thought, what if the player is given the sense that this huge flying beast isn't such much their pet as it is a wild thing that you've gained the trust of, and isn't completely docile like a dog?
Oh! That's definitely not a bad thought.. But there should be a time investment for breeding, definitely. Maybe they can only breed on the full moon, or maybe they only decide themselves after you've paired them up and hearted them, somewhere from 8-20 days... And you should need to build a special "brooding box" item or something like that, a little box filled with hay for the "female" to sit on that the egg is eventually laid into.. She should then be unrideable during that time.
Still... If (like dogs) the gryphons are only linked to one person, should they really be able to create a whole flock of them? You'd only be able to breed them obviously if you had two gryphons, so there's definitely the issue of that.. What's the purpose? It would just be for breeding them, you can't ride more than one... So.. Should you be able to grant ownership of the gryphon to another player by giving them something like the gryphon's whistle? Maybe you need to create a NEW whistle, like a map, for each gryphon, and play it when they are born several times until hearts appear, to make them bound to that whistle?
There are some ideas i really like here. Like only being able to breed during a full moon. That would make the player actually have a reason to keep track of the moon and the sky, other than telling what time of the day it is.
I also like the idea of a brooding box for the female to lay an egg on. Especially since wild eggs will be found on nests. It makes sense that wild and domestic eggs would be laid on similar locations.
The concept of a whistle is very interesting. It sounds almost like how you have to repeatedly feed a wild wolf bones until hearts appear and they put on a collar. That would be a good way of making a Gryphon loyal to you, without having to wait until its an adult so you could saddle it.
I was a little skeptical at first, not with the idea of having a ridable flying mob but with it being a gryphon... and why not just an eagle or other bird. But once I saw the concept art, I thought it looked great. It fit perfectly and was done so well that I'm completely for this. This is a very realist idea, especially with Support Suggestion number 2, seeing a gryphon fly in the direction of its nest from time to time... that's so awesome. Great idea.
My thought is that you could only breed gryphons without saddles. If you saddle it then it is tied to you, and can not breed. There is essentially no point to having multiple saddled gryphons at once. However backups if one died would be good.
I would suggest that by feeding the proper food to two gryphons (as usual) they enter "love" mode and will spawn an egg on a dirt (hay?!) block nearby. They would then be unable to mate again for at least a few days, or at all while an egg is near by (you need to remove it. They will protect the egg however, so constructing the breading area to make it easy to collect would be required/advised.
In multiplayer anyone could saddle any adult gryphon, thus you could sell them fully grown, raise one for a friend, or simply trade in eggs.
Ah smart!! This would help solve the ownership issue... And why it would make sense to ever have more than one (other than for breeding, which creates an endless loop of more gryphons that you didn't need in the first place,)... So they would exist basically as pigs (well, moreso of course) up until your saddle goes on.
I like it.
Should you be able to lead them around somehow when they're not in saddled mode?

Haha that's just how I imagine it in my head... God only knows where you would get hay from to do the crafting with, of course. Wheat?
I think they would follow someone holding meat/fish. And hay bails are actually a potential future block, there was an Easter egg in on of the Mojam games with a screenshot of a minecraft house with a hay roof.
Okay so another thing we have not touched on: If one kills a gryphon, what next? Is there a drop? Is there XP? Are you cursed for killing such a majestic beast?
Drop: I would suggest a feather. Not a normal one, a Gryphon Feather. What is it for? IDK, perhaps some kind of fall damage reduction, or a new kind of arrow, or maybe you craft it with a leather hat! Something, not sure what.
Wow... This is almost a hot topic! (100 replies to a topic marks it as hot.) There might actually be a chance of having this implemented in 1.6!
On topic, I think that the most balanced thing to do would be for the gryphon to have health, but a large amount of it (maybe 50 hearts like the iron golem), and have a hunger bar like the player.
This is, in my opinion, the best suggestion ever. Not only is it a really good and balanced flying mount, but it's Gryphons! You can't get much cooler than that! You have my full support with this suggestion.
Also, where can I get that really cool banner? Gryphons are SO much cooler than magma cubes, in more ways than one.
Now all we have to do is hope they don't have the attitude of Gilda, or maybe they should. It would be funny watching her react to some strange blocky human riding her.

XP: A significant amount.
Curse: JK.
that sounds about right. i imagine the feather could probably be used as some sort of alchemy ingredient.

Yeah they should definitely have a lot of health. And i hope this does make it into 1.6

I think it would be better to just have the dragon egg spawn something(don't know what, maybe a mini dragon), rather than include a whole new mob into the game, and if it is the dragon egg, you can only use it one.

No, then you could only have one ever on a server.

The idea is that a dragon is a bit OP. Plus the egg is one of a kind, on servers this is a problem. This is a much more manageable suggestion, that includes various balancing factors. And it is perfectly compatible with multiple players.

I love dragons as much as the next guy, but i'd really love to see Gryphons in a video game other than World of Warcraft.
except when this gets added to the game im reskinning the eagle head to a beaver. ;D
great post though. flight mechanics don't need to be as complex as some people are suggesting.

Something like that.
This is post 100! Also, my 700th post!
A thread becomes a hot topic if it receives 100 or more posts with more posts frequently.

ahahah you WERE the 100th post. that was either good luck, or amazing timing.
We got it.
Beat you too it. (sig code)
And it was timing. I even timed my 700th post to be the same one.
Now how would it be used in alchemy? Interesting, but I'm not sure what it would do. Flight potion? (temp creative flight?)
You should probably add this to the OP.

There is no egg for it. And it can not be spawned with any vanilla commands. This can only be done through mods. This is a vanilla suggestion.
To be honest, i'm not sure. Maybe a temp creative flight potion, yeah. It'd only last like 10 seconds or something though.
Thanks friend!
I see that you have tried to use our banner, and i thank you for it, but it seems it didn't work. I may have posted it wrong.

Will do. Thanks for donning the banner.
