Hello other patrollers of the minecraft suggestion forum. I was going to put this in the discussion forum, but I wanted to put it here because I wasn't sure anyone would see it if I didn't.
Moh's Scale of Hardness:
As most of you know, Moh's scale measures the hardness of materials on a scale, Diamond being at the top at 10 (Followed by corundum, topaz, quartz etc.)
Unfortunately, I see this word being bandied about way too much on this forum, specifically when talking about tools and diamonds and realism.
Hardness as a geological term is a materials resistance to being scratched. Literally that. A diamond is at the top because no other natural mineral or material can scratch it besides itself (Some diamonds are harder than others, depends on the crystal)(And some hypothetical occuring ones, but shhhh). Some man made materials can scratch diamond, but let's skip over that.
Toughness:
A materials ability to absorb energy before fracturing. Ah, this is what we were looking for. Toughness measures (basically) how much force a material requires to break, not scratch, but fracture. Toughness does not correspond directly to hardness.
As such, Hematite, which has a hardness of 6-5.5, has an extreme, or excellent toughness rating.
Diamond however, with a hardness of 10, usually is rated as "fair" or "good" with toughness.
Jadeite or Nephrite Jade also has more toughness than diamonds, and if you smash a Jade and a diamond together hard enough, the Diamond can fracture or break, and the jadeite might just scratch and bruise a bit.
As you can see, diamonds are extremely hard materials, and it used correctly, can be very useful. But no, even though diamond comes from a greek word meaning "unconquerable" or "unbreakable" , it can be broken, and it can be broken with not that much effort.
This was just to clear things up, as on every material suggesting thread or diamond thread I see, it ends up turning into a shouting match on Hardness.
-Withnothing, Amateur Geologist
-P.S. (Most diamonds aren't made from coal )
If I got anything wrong, please tell me, I'm actually pretty new to toughness myself. I was trying to find a scale or a picture I could put up, but eh, oh well.
(Edit: I should have put it in a different forum, I see that, so.....please no one respond to this thread anymore)
How in the world is this a suggestion? This could go in discussion, but might fit better in the "science" section of off topic. Not sure where you're coming from by deciding to put it here.

To silence those people suggesting ridiculous stuff about Diamonds? Like that recent (Never mind. It was a 2010 suggestion which was necrobumped.) suggestion of Diamond Tools that never break? (It was a horrible suggestion, and it was not even realistic)

This. While you are 100% correct, it's not a big deal. If people try and use the "Diamonds are the hardest thing ever" argument someone usually corrects them. And while this thread is chock full of knowledge-y goodness, it doesn't really have discussion value here. So... interesting stuff, but this won't do a single thing to stop people from making crazy diamond suggestions.

I wonder who would the first one to suggest Throwable Diamonds as weapons...
