What if you are affected by poison or "tried to swim" in lava?
That's where resistances come in.
There are 4 resistances: Fall, Poison, Wither and Fire.
If you fall and take damage, the chance of raising resistance depends on how much fall damage you take and your current resistance. This is capped at 80%. At 80% resistance, 10 hearts of fall damage is reduced to 2 hearts.
If you get poisoned, the chance of resistance going up by 1% is 100% minus current resistance for every 2 hearts of poison damage. The chance to resist poison is equal to poison resistance. Once you get 100% poison resistance, Cave Spiders no longer poison you. Spider Eyes and poison potion no longer affect you.
If you take damage from fire or lava, your resistance to fire goes up by 1. It takes 2 hearts for first 1% of resistance. Afterwards, it takes 2 additional heart per percentage of resistance. It takes 4 hearts to go up from 1% to 2%, 6 hearts from 2% to 3%. To get full immunity, you have to take a total 200 hearts of damage from 99% to 100%. The percentage increases until fire and lava can no longer damage you. You also can move through lava at same speed at water.
For every 2 hearts of Wither damage, you are entitled to increase of Wither resistance by 1%. The chance is 100% minus current Wither resistance. If you have 10% resistance to Wither, there is 90% chance that your resistance will increase. That way, it's easy to get the first few percentage but takes a long time to get the final percentage. At 100% Wither resistance, Wither Skeleton and Withers can no longer inflict Wither on you. (They still can inflict physical damage)
The only games where Level grinding is aceptable is in a JRPG. So.. No support.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
THIS reminds me of the rpg bukkit mod McMMO. This should not be in vanilla minecraft at all. No support because this is a sandbox game and if this was forced on everyone in vanilla then servers that don't want to use McMMO would be ruined and MANY others problems will occur. As a plugin things are more flexible. When the mod API comes out then this plugin could be easier to install and maybe a ssp version would be released.
This would be simple to abuse. Fire+timed potion dispenser, fall damage+health potion or just plain old putting your items in a chest, wither skeleton+regeneration, poison+regeneration.
Minecraft (vanilla) should not possess core RPG elements such as these, it is a sandbox game. For RPG elements, there are several good mods to try out (tale of kingdoms is a recommendation from me).
