So far, Mojang has been talking about optimizing the lighting engine, and it seems
to have mostly to do with improving performance and directional lighting. As neat
as all of that stuff is, I'm still awaiting an upgrade to the visual side of the lighting
engine. I'm not talking Sonic Ethere's Unbeleivable Shaders here, just a few simpler
changes.
First of all, the highlights and shadows. Minecraft uses a rather bleak light-side
dark-side system when rendering blocks and entities. What I would like to see is
something where at day time, the light sides of blocks are tinted a sort of sunlight
golden and the darker sides have more of a subtle (but noticeable) blueish tone.
This would not only look more realistic, but also a heck of a lot more lively and
pretty. At night time, there would be more contrast between the light and dark sides
with the light side being a sort of dark moonlight blue and the dark sides nearly
pitch-black. When it's rainy, it would use the current lighting style, perhaps a
bit of pale green too. A stormy night would use a more noticeable greenish-grey.
Areas in shadow should also look a bit blueish, jsut like the shaded sides of blocks.
Second, torchlight. When they said they were adding warmer light and
showed the screenshots, I thought they were joking. Why does it look warmer
FURTHER away from the torch and a regular cold white CLOSER? They should
cast a much less dull light, going from bright yellow to progressively duller orange,
instead of white to dull redish brown.
Finally water. Not exactly a light issue I guess, but the water needs some fixing.
It should be a bit more transparnet and reflective-looking (No mirror-water shader.
Just a bit shinier), only turning blue as you go VERY deep underwater. Minecraft
water currently looks less like water and more like that blue minty gunk you use to
highlite plaque on your teeth.
Umm... Maybe a third lighting option? Very Smooth (This) Smooth (Same as now) Basic (Basically what we have when smooth lighting is disabled). Sorry your idea has been getting blocked out by everyone stabbing Zigzagar and his sumos, but this is a decent idea actually.
I know if this does happen, it will either happen now or not for a long time. Dinnerbone was just saying on Twitter that any changes they can do to improve the lighting system is currently slowing the game down a ton, and it isn't an issue that shaders or rewriting the code will fix. So getting it right is imperative but it looks like it is a lot of trouble for them right now.

That's a shame. Minecraft could really use something to improve it aesthetically, since
it IS a building game after all.
