So, in 1.5, the texture pack system is changing, and terrain.png and items.png will be separated into single files for each block and item. This allows for textures to be animated, without even patching I think.
So, what I would like is just for the animation to only play when you select the item in your inventory, and not when it's just sitting in your inventory. It's a really small, simple change, but here is why I want it:
I'm working on a new texture pack with some gear-punk like tools, like a pickaxe with blades that fold down when not in use. So, it would be awesome if I could make it so that when you select it in your inventory and take it out, the animation plays of the blades folding out.
I would time the animation with an included text file so that that part of the animation plays once, then a still frame or another loop would play for an insanely long time (so that there's no way you would see the unfolding animation again before de-selecting the tool).
Anyway, just a little tweak that I would love to see, and I think texture pack makers could use it to make really cool animations.
A nice idea indeed, but there a little problem. In 1.5, compass and watches uses animated textures to show needle's direction/current time.
And that would be a pain if you need to hold them if you want them to work.
Oh jeez, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder if it would be possible to just make those items the exception...

That's also a good idea.
