Okay, so, I know you've all had those moments...Standing on that cliff, surveying the valley below for a route down, when suddenly you get shot off the edge by a sneaky skeleton or creeper blast.
What if there was a way to stop your fall entirely?
Not just reduce fall damage with MCMMO acrobatics or Feather Falling enchantments; Those are a fix for a lot of it, but you still fall a long ways sometimes. My idea gives you at least a chance of not falling 70 blocks from your house atop a mountain.
The starter point of this idea is that you progress in the game by breaking blocks...This means you dig into dirt with a shovel, plunge a pickaxe into stone, hack your axe through wood, and rake your hoe through soil. You even plunge your sword into mobs! Then I thought, "well why can't I stop or slow my fall with my sword?"
Think about that; You see it in movies and games sometimes. The bad guy gets a sneaky kick in on the good guy, but he plunges his blade in to the stone wall before him, throwing up sparks and sliding to a halt before either falling anyway, swinging to the side and landing on a ledge, or even climbing back up to attack the baddie who no longer expects him. The only ways to do this in vanilla minecraft is to throw a pearl back up as you fall.
Instead of that, or rather in addition, I figured you should be able to strike out at a block in front of you as you fall and, depending on how long you've been falling, either slow or stop your fall entirely.
Naturally, you can't stop your fall if you're striking a wall with a material weaker than what the wall is made of; For instance, if you only have a wood sword on hand, and the wall is stone, you won't get anywhere. You'll just fall. And probably die, because if you're still using a wood sword...
Also, a few materials would have special effects when you attempt to do this;
Glass and glass panes would shatter, as would Glowstone;
Sand would break, as would gravel;
Jack O Lanterns, Pumpkins, and Melon Blocks would simply break in to their respective drops;
Soul Sand would always stop you falling, due to the sticky, slowing nature of the block;
Dirt and Grass would have a 50/50 chance of breaking upon being struck while falling;
Obsidian would just make sparks and bounce your blade away.
I'm probably missing a few for the above list; Suggest ideas for that part if you want.
Now, you'll probably argue that this is overpowered. "But you can just jump from the top of the map and arrest your fall on soulsand 20 blocks above the ground!"
No. The larger your fall, the more durability your sword loses. The tougher the material, the more durability your sword loses. You also cannot hang like that for very long, 5 seconds maximum.
Also, if you're hit while hanging, you not only fall, but you drop your sword. Unless you catch it as you fall, which won't happen unless you're falling a very long time, you can't arrest your fall again. This is to prevent it being overused in PvP, particularly on raid servers; Shot off a skybase? Oh, just plunge your sword into the pillar that got you up there...ah , they shot you off and your sword went flying. Now you die of fall damage. You also take a small bit of damage from arresting a long fall, say 1-3 hearts.
Tl;dr?
-Striking a block with a sword while falling will either stop or slow your fall, depending on time spent falling.
-Using a sword weaker than the wall will not work.
-Striking really strong blocks like obsidian will not work.
-Striking really weak or fragile blocks like sand and glass will only break them.
-Maximum hangtime with a sword stuck in a wall is ~5 seconds.
-Being hit while hanging will knock you off the wall and cause you to drop your sword.
-Using this ability costs durability from your sword.
-Initial impact with a wallhang from a long fall still does 1-3 hearts of damage
-Wood Swords are effectively useless because they can only arrest your fall on dirt and grass, which break half the time you try.
Well - it I guess it doesn't have to be JUST the sword... It can happen when mining & you may have a pickaxe in your hand anyway (underground chasm for example) or you're cutting down a tree on hilltop when shot (so you most probably have an axe in hand) but I agree - nice idea but I guess would be hell to program
That's way to complicated for what it is. Falling is part of the game and has it's charms, although unpleasant at the time.
There are two mayor disadvantages I think:
- I don't always have my sword in my hand. By the time I selected my sword I'm dead anyway. Feather falling boots are more reliable and are actually meant to deal with this problem.
- I have a feeling you are going to loose your sword much faster in the game, even without 'falling'. Because how will they be able to program the difference between falling and something like a jump? It's not the first time I'm battling mobs jumping around, or jumping/falling from small cliffs wealding my sword like a maniac. So whenever you are in the air and hit somehing with your sword it'll loose more durability according to your explanation than it would now.
It looks cool in movies, but that's it.
No support.
Exacttly. Unless it actually knows if you want to do a leap of faith while stabbing enemies or just thrown off a cliff, it would be way too derpy.

Thoughts?
What about Parkour? like a long way down?
